Rams score all six runs with two outs in 6-1 win
ARLINGTON, Va. -Â GW baseball fell in its first rubber game of the season, 6-1, on Sunday afternoon to Rhode Island at Tucker Field at Barcroft Park. The series setback for GW was the first since the opening weekend of the year.
Rhode Island capitalized on clutch at-bats to come away with the triumph, scoring all six of its runs with two outs. A solo homer in the first gave URI an early lead that was added on to with a two-out double in the second. A two-run, two-out double in the third doubled the advantage to 4-0.
GW struggled to get the bats going, registering just six hits on the day. First-year Anthony Frechette notched a multi-hit game, going 2-for-2 with a walk and a run scored. Junior Steve Barmakian accounted for the only RBI with a sacrifice fly in the last of the eighth inning.
Junior Jaret Edwards started for the Colonials and suffered his first loss of the year, giving up four runs on six hits in 2.2 innings. Five GW relievers combined to limit URI to two runs on six hits the rest of the way.
Rhode Island starter Justin Cherry was strong on the bump for the visitors, earning his first win of the year with an efficient 8.0 innings on the hill, allowing just a run on five hits.
GW continues its seven-game homestand with a mid-week matchup against UMBC on Tuesday at 3 p.m.Â
