Colonials notch six two-out RBIs en route to first road win of the year
HANOVER, Md. - GW baseball plated six two-out tallies and received a solid pitching performance from five pitchers in a 7-1 win over Coppin State on Wednesday afternoon at Joe Cannon Stadium.
Senior Dom D'Alessandro led the Colonial offense with a three-hit day, driving in three runs and scoring twice. Redshirt freshman Derek Ripp plated two while junior Steve Barmakian notched a pair of hits and scored a pair of runs.
Ripp got GW going early with a two-out, two-run single in the first, staking his brother, first-year Blake Ripp to a 2-0 lead. Blake allowed a run in the bottom half of the frame, but got some help from his defense in a diving play from junior Cal Stalzer with two away to end the rally and keep GW ahead, 2-1.
D'Alessandro came through with a two-run, two-out single in the second to push the advantage to 4-1, a lead that remained until D'Alessandro scored on a two-out double from first-year Noah Levin in the top of the fifth.
The Colonials pushed across two more runs in the seventh on singles from first-year Logan Doran and D'Alessandro, the last of which came with two away.
That was more than enough for the Buff & Blue pitching staff, which held Coppin State to only six hits. Redshirt senior Kevin Hodgson came on in the second and got out of a jam with a comebacker to keep the momentum on GW's side.
Hodgson ultimately earned his first win of the year, tossing 3.1 scoreless frames with two hits allowed and two strikeouts. Junior Andrew Wheeler struck out three in two spotless innings while senior Pat Knight and junior Keagan McGinnis authored a scoreless frame each.
GW now turns its attention to Atlantic 10 play, opening the conference season this weekend at the Tuck against Rhode Island. First pitch on Friday is scheduled for 3 p.m., followed by a 1 p.m. start on Saturday and noon start on Sunday. All three games will be streamed on ESPN+.
