Colonials and Rams square off in rubber game Sunday at noon

ARLINGTON, Va. - GW baseball faced an odd set of circumstances on Saturday afternoon and ultimately came away with a split decision in a pair of games against Rhode Island to open conference play.

The Rams ran away with the opener, which was resumed in the third inning after being suspended Friday, before GW responded with a 4-3 triumph in the originally scheduled contest.

Friday's game was picked up in the third inning with URI on top 3-0 and threatening for more, but redshirt senior Kevin Hodgson started the day with a strikeout to end the threat.

However, the momentum was short-lived as GW mustered only five hits and saw Rhode Island score multiple runs in their final five at-bats to post the lopsided win.

Junior Steve Barmakian provided GW's only RBI with a run-scoring groundout in the last of the eighth inning.

The Colonials quickly wiped away the opening setback with a thrilling one-run win, the third such victory so far this year.

The offense picked up early with Barmakian singling in the home half of the first and stealing second to get in position for senior Dom D'Alessandro, who poked a single to right to give GW a quick 1-0 lead.

URI tied the game in the third and took the lead on a solo homer in the fourth, but the Colonials came right back to move ahead for good in the home half. Junior Nate Fassnacht and D'Alessandro started the frame with a pair of singles before both came home on a double from first-year Noah Levin, putting GW ahead 3-2.

First-year Cade Fergus doubled the advantage with a solo homer, his second of the year, in the fifth inning.

That was enough for the Colonial pitching staff, led by redshirt senior Brady Renner, who went 5.0 innings and allowed two runs on four hits to earn his first win of the year.

URI got a run in the seventh inning, and had a golden opportunity to tie or take the lead in the eighth inning with two in scoring position and two down, but junior Keagan McGinnis came on to get a groundout and eliminate the threat. McGinnis quickly set down the side in order in the ninth to pick up his fourth save of the campaign.

The Colonials and Rams will decide the series on Sunday in the series finale with first pitch scheduled for noon. The game will be streamed live on ESPN+.
