Colonials hold league's second-best record entering conference play
WASHINGTON - Fresh off another set of mid-week victories, GW baseball returns to the Tuck to begin Atlantic 10 play by welcoming Rhode Island this weekend. The series is set to start Friday at 3 p.m., followed by a 1 p.m. first pitch Saturday and 12 p.m. start on Sunday. All three games will be streamed on ESPN+.
DURING THE MID-WEEK: GW took care of a pair of MEAC teams this week, blasting Delaware State, 18-1, on Tuesday before winning at Coppin State, 7-1, on Wednesday. The Colonials pitching staff yielded just eight hits in the two games, while the offense racked up 25 hits and had six different players register multi-RBI games.
AMONG THE NATION'S BEST: GW's offensive onslaught has placed the team in elite company in the early season, averaging 8.9 runs per game, seventh best in the NCAA. The Colonials are also top 15 in the nation in triples (11, 4th), doubles (49, 8th), hits (231, 9th), runs (178, 10th), on-base percentage (.418, 11th) and batting average (.310, 14th).
Individually, junior Nate Fassnacht, the three-time defending A-10 Player of the Week, leads the nation with 14 doubles and is tied for the team lead in batting average with senior Dom D'Alessandro at .430. The Colonials are the only team in the nation with two players ranked in the top 25 in batting average, with the duo tied for 24th.
HOT START: The Colonials enter the weekend with a 13-7 mark, their best record through the first 20 games in a season since 2003, when GW started 17-4 by virtue of a 13-game winning streak. The 13 wins are the second-most in the Atlantic 10, trailing only VCU (15).
ABOUT THE RAMS: Rhode Island enters the weekend with a 4-11 record following a 6-5 setback to Sacred Heart in its home opener on Wednesday. The series sets up as a pivotal one to start A-10 play with URI projected seventh in the preseason A-10 poll and GW eighth. The top seven teams make the postseason tournament.
The Rams hit .237 as a team, led by Max Mircovich at .417 and Kevin Heiss at .349. On the bump, URI has a 6.30 team ERA, paced by Ryan Twitchell at 2.87 in four games (two starts).
