D'Alessandro and Fassnacht combine for four extra-base hits, seven RBI
The Colonials offense was once again nearly unstoppable, tying a season high with 18 base knocks, seven of which went for extra bases. Senior Dom D'Alessandro and junior Nate Fassnacht delivered a three-run home run each as the duo combined for seven hits, six runs scored and seven RBI.
Fassnacht's blast ignited the day for GW in the last of the first inning as the Colonials ended up sending 10 men to the dish and scoring five times to take an early 5-0 lead. First-year Logan Doran and junior Alex O'Rourke drove in runs later in the frame.
GW matched its output in the second inning, again scoring five and sending 10 men to the plate. A throwing error plated the first run before first-year Noah Levin doubled to bring home two, making it 8-0. Doran and classmate Cade Fergus provided RBI singles to put the Colonials ahead 10-0.
A sacrifice fly from sophomore Tyler Hix in the third inning gave redshirt senior Brady Renner a comfortable 11-0 lead to work with. Renner pitched into the fifth inning, allowing only an unearned run on four hits with three strikeouts.
Iona whittled the deficit to six with five straight runs, but D'Alessandro erased any doubt with a monster three-run homer in the last of the seventh inning. Fassnacht capped the day off with an RBI single in the eighth, finishing his day by going 3-for-4 with four runs scored and four RBI. D'Alessandro notched a four-hit day with two doubles and the homer, scoring twice and driving in three.
Hix, Levin and Doran contributed two hits a piece with the latter two driving in two each. Junior Greg Anderberg was 3-for-5 on the day, giving GW six multi-hit performers.
Having assured a series victory, the Colonials will look for the sweep of the Gaels, and a sixth straight win, on Sunday afternoon. First pitch is scheduled for noon.
