Levin goes yard for the second time this season
ARLINGTON, Va. - GW baseball entered Sunday's series finale with Iona possessing the opportunity to secure its second sweep of the season. However, the Gaels scored four runs in the first two innings, and never trailed in an 8-2 victory at Tucker Field at Barcroft Park.
First-year Alex Kobersteen got the start and utilized a double play with the bases loaded to work out of extended damage in the first inning. The Gaels grabbed a 2-0 lead in the second and GW appeared to be out of the frame, but a dropped fly ball with two outs allowed two runs to score, making it 4-0.
First-year Noah Levin provided the lone highlight offensively for the Colonials, blasting a two-run homer in the last of the fourth inning to halve the deficit, 4-2.
But Iona came right back with three runs in the fifth, all coming with two outs, to regain the momentum. GW had just one hit the rest of the way, a double from junior Nate Fassnacht in the eighth, as it struggled to find its footing against Iona starter Hunter Sibley. Fassnacht's knock did extend his hitting streak to 13 in a row, matching the team's longest this year.
The Colonials bullpen yielded just an unearned run in 4.1 innings of work, with senior Pat Knight logging 2.1 scoreless frames featuring a pair of punchouts.
GW wraps up its 16-game homestand on Tuesday afternoon, hosting Delaware State on Tuesday at 3 p.m. The Colonials will then hit the road for the first time this month with a trip to Coppin State on Wednesday.
