WASHINGTON - Junior Kevin Mahala went 4-for-4 with a home run and junior Eric Ramsey added his first career long ball to help the George Washington baseball team to the season sweep over Towson with a 7-2 win on Tuesday afternoon at Tucker Field at Barcroft Park.
GW (17-21) has now won five games in a row, its longest winning streak of the season, and will visit Georgetown on Wednesday evening.
Sophomore Robbie Metz earned the win on Tuesday after throwing seven innings of one-run ball. He scattered eight hits and allowed just one unearned run with one walk and two strikeouts.
GW took a 1-0 lead in the first inning after junior Joey Bartosic led off with base hit, moved to second on a groundout, stole third and then scored on a squeeze bunt RBI by junior Cody Bryant.
The Colonials plated three runs in the third to extend the lead to 4-0. Bartosic, junior Andrew Selby and Bryant drew consecutive one-out walks to load the bases ahead of reigning Atlantic 10 Player of the Week Bobby Campbell, who connected on a two-run single to push the lead to 3-0. Mahala then followed with an infield RBI single for the 4-0 lead.
Ramsey led off the fifth inning with his first career home run to push the lead to 5-0. He swung at the first pitch of the at-bat and smacked the ball off of the scoreboard in right center field.
Ramsey added a sacrifice fly in the sixth inning to put the Colonials ahead 6-0.
Towson took advantage of an error to score its first run of the game in the top half of the seventh to make the score 6-1, but Mahala got the run back when he blasted his third home run of the season over the wall in straightaway center field to give GW a six-run cushion at 7-1.
The Tigers got one run back in the ninth but sophomore Tyler Swiggart retired the side to end the game. Swiggart pitched two innings and allowed one run on two hits with a strikeout.
First pitch on Wednesday night is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. from Shirley Povich Field.
