GW Baseball Falls at Georgetown, 2-1

WASHINGTON - Junior Matt Cosentino gave the George Washington baseball team a 1-0 lead in the second inning but it was not enough as Georgetown rallied to take a 2-1 decision and end the Colonials five-game win streak on Wednesday night at Shirley Povich Field.
Georgetown (18-20) threatened in the first inning, putting runners on the corners with one out, but GW (17-22) starter Randy Dalrymple got a strikeout for the second out before the Colonials' defense threw out an attempted base stealer to end the inning.
Junior Kevin Mahala led off the top of the second with a single to center and then moved to third on a one-out base knock by junior Andrew Selby. Cosentino then hit an infield RBI single to put GW ahead, 1-0. The Colonials were poised for more after junior Brandon Chapman singled, but Selby was thrown out trying to score at the plate. A strikeout ended the inning.
The Hoyas loaded the bases with two outs in the bottom of the third after consecutive singles and an intentional walk, but Dalrymple once again turned away the threat with an inning-ending groundout.
GW left the bases loaded in the top half of the fourth, unable to capitalize following two walks and a single.
Georgetown broke through with a pair of runs on three hits in the bottom of the fourth, chasing Dalrymple from the game in the process.
The Hoyas bullpen silenced the Colonials down the stretch to preserve the 2-1 lead and clinch the win.
Sophomore Chance Malek threw 3.2 innings of hitless relief out of the bullpen with five walks and three strikeouts. Juniors Jordan Sheinkop (0.1) and Eddie Muhl (1.0, three strikeouts) combined to keep the Colonials in the game by not allowing a baserunner.
Cosentino led the Colonials with two hits at the plate.
Dalrymple was tagged with the loss after allowing two runs on seven hits with two walks and one strikeout in three innings of work.
Jimmy Swad earned the win in relief for Georgetown with two scoreless innings with one walk and two strikeouts.
GW resumes Atlantic 10 play at Dayton with a three-game series that begins on Friday afternoon at 3:00 p.m.
