The George Washington baseball team concludes its short five-game road swing on Tuesday, traveling to VMI for a 5:00 p.m. first pitch on ESPN+. The GW Revolutionaries then return home this weekend as the program honors GW legend Sam Perlozzo's No. 4 jersey on Saturday as part of a three-game series with Saint Louis. This weekend's schedule against the Billikens includes games on Friday (3:00 p.m.), Saturday (1:00 p.m.) and Sunday (12:00 p.m.), with all three carried live on ESPN+.
Perlozzo will become the second GW baseball player to have his jersey number recognized at Tucker Field this season. Perlozzo's No. 4 will join Henry "Hank" Bunnell's No. 18, which was retired on March 15th against Rhode Island. Bunnell and Perlozzo are the lone members of the GW baseball program to receive such honors after GW Athletics announced in September the plan to honor 10 Buff & Blue greats throughout the 2025-26 academic year.
Playing at GW from 1970-72, Perlozzo ranks in the top 10 in program history in stolen bases, more than 50 years after his graduation. He swiped 52 bags over the course of his career, the most the program had seen at the time of his graduation. Perlozzo was named GW's inaugural Team MVP in 1972, an honor that's been bestowed upon a member of the baseball program at the conclusion of each season ever since. He was also named an Academic All-American that same season.
VMI enters Tuesday's matchup with a stellar 23-8 record but has lost consecutive SoCon series to East Tennessee State and Wofford the previous two weekends. The Keydets started the year a program-best 16-2 and defeated GW, 8-5, on March 24, but have cooled down in recent weeks, going 3-4 in their last seven games. VMI is led by Head Coach Sam Roberts, who's in his fourth season with the program. Roberts has led VMI to 25 or more wins in each of his first three seasons, the first time that's happened in 17 years for the team. The Keydets finished fifth in the nation in batting average at .322 in Roberts' second season, and the team has led the nation the past two seasons in stolen bases.
VMI's offense is paced by Grayson Fitzwater, who's batting .400 on the season in 105 at-bats. He's totaled a team-best 42 hits, including 12 doubles and 12 home runs, while also driving in 45 RBI. Fitzwater holds a .876 slugging percentage and a .555 on-base percentage through the team's first 31 games. Owen Prince is slashing .353 from the dish with 41 hits and 46 runs scored. VMI's complete 2026 season stats can be found here.
Prior to traveling to The Tuck this weekend, Saint Louis will face Illinois State on the road for a 6:00 p.m. game on Tuesday evening. The Billikens, under the guidance of Interim Head Coach Miles Miller, who took over the program during the offseason after the departure of longtime skipper Darin Hendrickson, hold a 13-18 overall record and a 4-8 mark in A-10 action after being swept last weekend by Saint Joseph's.
SLU is led by Ian Blazier, who's hitting .284 from the plate. Blazier is second on the team with 28 hits and leads the program with a slugging percentage of .398. Riley Iffrig holds a .284 batting average in 31 games, holding a team-best 33 hits and driving in 19 RBI. On the mound, Saint Louis' starting rotation has consisted of Ty Holman, Ben Cherico and Noah Andrunas for weekend series. Holman leads the group with a 3.22 ERA in eight appearances, tossing 36.1 total innings and holding a 2-1 record. SLU's complete 2026 stats can be found here.
