Despite 14 hits and seven runs, the George Washington baseball team fell on the road to VMI on Tuesday afternoon, 10-7. The Revolutionaries slipped to 11-20 on the year ahead of a crucial three-game series with Saint Louis this weekend.
Josh Wenz got the scoring started in the first, registering an RBI on a groundout to first base. Greg Marmo scored on the play, giving GW a quick 1-0 lead. The Keydets quickly answered back with two runs in the first and one in the second, but Wenz's day got even better with a two-run homer to right field to tie the game at three in the third. Two batters later, Charlie Rogan got in on the action, launching a solo homer, his ninth of the season, to give GW a 4-3 advantage.
GW's advantage stretched in the fourth as GW took a 5-3 lead on a throwing error from VMI's right fielder. Later in the inning, Cristino Tufano tallied his first RBI of the day, scoring Robbie Lavey on a single to left field, to give the Buff & Blue a 6-3 advantage.
VMI's bats came alive in the fifth, scoring four runs of their own to recapture a 7-6 lead. The Keydets poured it on with one more in the sixth and two in the seventh to extend the lead to 10-6.
The Buff & Blue plated one in the ninth on a throwing error from VMI's second baseman, but couldn't register any more runs with the bases loaded.
Jonas Aponick earned the start for GW, tossing 0.2 innings and allowing two earned runs. The loss was charged to Ryan Barks, dropping him to 0-1 this year. Jasper Nadel enjoyed a scoreless outing in relief, blanking VMI in the eighth on seven total pitches.
GW returns to action on Friday, opening a three-game series with Saint Louis in Atlantic 10 action. First pitch is scheduled for 3:00 p.m. on ESPN+. Prior to Saturday's 1:00 p.m. start time, GW will honor program great Sam Perlozzo, whose No. 4 jersey will be honored pregame in a special ceremony on the field.
