ARLINGTON, Va. – The George Washington baseball team picked up its first win of the 2026 season on Saturday, securing a 7-3 victory over Lehigh in game one of a doubleheader at Tucker Field. The Mountain Hawks bounced back for a 6-3 win in game two, moving GW to 1-5 on the season.
GAME ONE
Lehigh wasted no time jumping out to an early lead, using a first inning solo home run to grab a 1-0 advantage. The Mountain Hawks doubled their advantage in the fifth, using an RBI single up the middle from Trystan Crawford to take a 2-0 lead.
In the home half of the fifth, GW evened the score via a two-run single into right field from Jack Kent. Scoring on the play were Nick Mullen and Charlie Walsh, bringing things back to level.
After Lehigh recaptured a 3-2 lead in the sixth, GW erupted for five runs in the seventh to put the game away. Christian Dewey got the scoring started on a double to right field, scoring Walsh. Kent followed it up with an RBI single down the left field line, plating Mullen. Christian Jones notched his first RBI at The Tuck with a single up the middle, while Christino Tufano picked up an RBI on a groundout to short. Charlie Rogan put the finishing touches on the inning with an infield single to first base, scoring Jones from third.
Andrew Cutler earned his second start of the season, tossing five innings and striking out six in the no-decision. Jonas Aponick was the winner on the mound, pitching two innings in relief and allowing one earned run. Drew Harris also tossed a scoreless eighth and ninth inning for GW.
GAME TWO
Lehigh's trend of early offense continued in the nightcap, scoring runs in the first, third and fifth innings to take a 3-0 lead. GW chipped away at the deficit in the fifth when Rogan hit a solo home run to left-center field, his third of the season.
The Buff & Blue made it a one-run game in the sixth when Dewey singled up the middle, scoring Kent. Lehigh answered back with two more runs in the seventh and one in the ninth, giving GW a four-run hole to dig out of in the home half of the inning. The Revolutionaries got one back via a throwing error from Lehigh's shortstop, but couldn't plate any more to fuel a comeback.
Declan Wywoda was charged with his first loss of the season, tossing 4.1 innings and allowing three earned runs in his second start of the season. Drew Oppenheim (0.2 innings), Colin Lebel (1.0 innings) and Aidan Carey (0.2 innings) all had scoreless appearances out of GW's bullpen.
The Buff & Blue return to action Tuesday, taking on Virginia in Charlottesville at 3:00 p.m. Live coverage of the contest will be available on ACC Network Extra and ESPN+.
