CULLOWHEE, N.C. – Despite jumping out to an early 5-0 lead, the George Washington baseball team couldn't secure the Opening Day win, falling to Western Carolina, 7-5, in 10 innings.
GW's offense came exclusively from the long ball, belting three home runs in the first three innings of the game. Robbie Lavey got things started in the first, launching a solo homer to deep right field. Charlie Rogan followed it up later in the inning with a two-run shot, scoring Nick Mullen to put GW up 3-0 early.
In the top of the third, Charlie Walsh got in on the action with a two-run belt to right field, scoring Tyler Jones, giving GW a 5-0 advantage.
Max Haug kept a clean bill through the first three frames, but four WCU runs in the fourth chased him early. Haug finished with two strikeouts and one walk in the no-decision. Gavin Miller gave GW three solid innings out of the bullpen, allowing just one hit and tallying three strikeouts to preserve GW's one-run lead.
Matt Bruno entered in the eighth, looking for the six-out save. After getting through the eighth unscathed, Bruno allowed the game-tying run on a two-out double to right field, sending the contest to extra innings.
GW's offense went 1-2-3 in the top half of the 10th, setting the table for Noah Quarless, who walked the game off on a two-run home run to center field. Bruno was charged with the loss, allowing three runs in 2.1 innings. WCU's Owen Austin picked up his first win of the season on the hill.
GW turns its attention to tomorrow's doubleheader, looking for the series win. Game one is set for 1:00 p.m., with game two to follow 45 minutes following the conclusion of game one. A live audio broadcast of the game will be available at GWsports.com.
