WASHINGTON – Under the guidance of Head Coach Gregg Ritchie, the George Washington baseball team opens the 2026 season this weekend, traveling to Cullowhee, N.C., for a three-game series vs. Western Carolina. Games are scheduled for Friday at 4:00 p.m. and a doubleheader on Saturday starting at 1:00 p.m. Friday's contest will be carried live on ESPN+.
Ritchie, who enters his 14th season at the helm of the program, returns standouts Robbie Lavey and Charlie Rogan to the lineup this season. Lavey finished his sophomore campaign batting .311, tallying a .463 slugging percentage and 59 total hits. He scored 41 runs, notched 12 doubles, and drove in 41 RBI. Rogan finished with a .303 average, putting together a .477 slugging percentage with 59 hits as well. Rogan's line included 17 doubles, 38 RBI, 37 runs scored and five home runs.
On the mound, reigning all-conference pitcher Andrew Cutler returns for the Revolutionaries. Cutler finished 2025 with a 4.20 ERA, notching a 6-0 record with 49.1 total innings of work. He struck out 46 batters and tallied a WHIP of 1.48. Max Haug also looks to post a strong senior season after breaking out in the Cape Cod League last summer.
GW also sees 13 newcomers join the fold, including 11 first-years and two transfers, who will all look to make an immediate impact with the Buff & Blue.
Western Carolina is coming off a 2025 season that finished with a 30-28 overall record. The Catamounts went 10-11 in SoCon and advanced to day three of the conference tournament before being ousted by The Citadel. Wyatt Stanley is WCU's top returner from a season ago, finishing his redshirt-freshman season with a .331 batting average, 49 hits, 18 doubles, 45 RBI and a .534 slugging percentage.
