CULLOWHEE, N.C. – The George Washington baseball team dropped both games of a doubleheader on Saturday at Western Carolina. The Buff & Blue fell in game one, 13-4, and dropped game two, 5-4.
GAME ONE
After a WCU three-run home run in the second got the home team up early, GW chipped away at the deficit with an RBI double from first-year Travis Peitz in the fifth. Scoring on the play was Charlie Walsh in Peitz's first career RBI.
The Catamounts posted 10 more runs over the next two innings, taking a commanding 13-1 lead. GW mounted a small rally in the seventh, kicked off by Christian Jones, who collected his first career RBI on a fielder's choice. Robbie Lavey knocked in GW's final two runs on an infield single to the shortstop, scoring Brodie Freker and Jones.
Andrew Cutler earned the start for GW, tossing 4.2 innings and allowing six earned runs. Cutler struck out three batters in his first loss of the season. Jasper Nadel tossed two scoreless innings in relief, recording one strikeout.
GAME TWO
After a scoreless first inning, Charlie Rogan put the GW Revs on top early, launching a solo home run to right field in the top of the second. Rogan finished the weekend with three total hits, two of which were home runs, and drove in three RBI.
GW maintained a 1-0 lead until the sixth, when Tyler Jones drilled a two-run homer to left field, scoring Pietz and giving GW a 3-0 cushion. WCU quickly answered back, though, tallying two runs of their own in the home half of the sixth, trimming GW's lead back down to one.
First-year Luke Maltacea gave GW a much-needed insurance run in the form of an RBI single to right field. Scoring on the play was C. Jones, giving GW a 4-2 edge.
A pair of walks put the tying run on base for Western Carolina, and after a GW wild pitch advanced both runners to second and third, a Walker Fox double evened the score at four-all. One batter later, Noah Quarless gave WCU its second walk-off in as many days, hitting a double into left field to score the winning run.
Declan Wywoda was solid in his first start of the season, tossing six innings, allowing two earned runs and striking out six. Drew Harris was charged with the loss, tossing 1.2 innings and allowing three earned runs.
GW will now travel back to Northern Virginia and open its 2026 home slate on Friday at 2:30 p.m., welcoming Lehigh to Tucker Field for a three-game series.
