Baseball Stumbles in Home Opener vs. Lehigh
2/20/2026 7:09:00 PM | Baseball
ARLINGTON – Despite a strong showing from senior Max Haug on the mound, the George Washington baseball team was unable to secure the win in its first game at Tucker Field in 2026, falling to Lehigh, 5-3.
After both starters dueled for 4.1 scoreless innings to open the game, GW found the scoreboard first on an RBI single to right field from Christian Dewey. Scoring on the play was Nick Mullen to put the Buff & Blue on top.
GW's one-run advantage lasted until the seventh when Haug hit his first rough patch of the start. He allowed the first five batters to reach base successfully, giving way to Gavin Miller out of the GW bullpen. Lehigh tallied four runs in the frame, two of which were earned, to take a 4-1 lead. Huag's afternoon finished at 6.0 innings logged, striking out five and walking two.
After the Mountain Hawks added another run in the ninth via a solo home run, GW attempted to string together a late comeback. Conlon Walker got the scoring started with an RBI single to left field, scoring Charlie Walsh. Jack Kent followed it up with an infield single to short, scoring Walker. Unfortunately, two runs is all GW could muster, falling in the team's home opener.
Due to inclement weather in the forecast, the teams will play a doubleheader tomorrow at Tucker Field to complete the series. Game one is set for 11:00 a.m., with game two following roughly 30 minutes after the conclusion of the first. Follow live stats for both games at GWsports.com.
