Baseball Cruises Past UMBC Behind Big Offensive Day
4/8/2025 7:47:00 PM | Baseball
GW's offense came early and often with Ellis Schwartz getting things started in the first on a two-run home run to left field. After UMBC got one back in the home half of the frame, the GW Revs answered back with an RBI single through the right side from Conlon Walker to make it 3-1, good guys.
GW's offense broke the game open in the third when it erupted for seven runs to take a commanding lead. Sean Sousa got things started with an RBI single up the middle, then was immediately followed by Walker, who ripped a two-RBI triple down the right-field line. Walker would eventually score on a wild throw from UMBC's catcher attempting to catch a GW baserunner stealing second to tally the Revolutionaries' seventh run of the game. Charlie Rogan capped off the inning with a two-run bomb, his fourth home run of the year.
UMBC managed to string together runs in the third, fifth and sixth to draw closer at 9-5, but the Revolutionaries had no plans of allowing a comeback and notched two more runs in the seventh to recapture a six-run lead at 11-5. Schwartz picked up his third RBI of the day off a single through the left side, while Cristino Tufano worked a bases-loaded walk for his first RBI of the afternoon.
Tyler Jones got in on the fun in the eighth, tallying an RBI single to the Retreivers' shortstop, scoring Walker from third base. Tufano tallied his second RBI of the day in the ninth with a single through the right side of the infield. Rogan finished the scoring on an RBI single to score Kobe Mentzer. UMBC notched runs in the sixth and eighth innings, but it wasn't nearly enough to thwart GW's offensive effort.
On the mound for the Revolutionaries, first-year Jonas Aponick earned his first collegiate start. Aponick tossed two innings and allowed two earned runs while tallying one strikeout. GW used six pitchers in the game, while Drew Harris earning the win after tossing two frames in relief. Harris allowed one earned run and struck out two batters. Brayden Kurtz pitched a scoreless ninth for GW as the only pitcher to keep a clean sheet in the game.
Rogan paced GW's offense with four hits on the day while also adding three RBI and three runs scored. Schwartz and Walker both finished with three hits and three RBI apiece, while Walker also added two runs scored. Charlie Walsh rounded out GW's four players with a multi-hit game with two base knocks and two runs scored.
GW returns to action Friday, traveling to Dayton for a three-game set with the Flyers. Friday's series opener will be carried live on ESPN+ at 3:00 p.m., while Saturday and Sunday's games will not be live-streamed. Both weekend games will begin at noon.
