WASHINGTON – The George Washington baseball team hits the road for four contests this week as the team approaches the midway point in the A-10 calendar. The Buff & Blue are set to battle UMBC on Tuesday in Baltimore at 3:00 p.m., then travel to Dayton for a three-game series against the Flyers starting on Friday. Tuesday's game vs. the Retrievers will be available to stream on America East's broadcasting platform, while Friday's series opener will be the only contest broadcasted on ESPN+ at Dayton.
UMBC enters the week 11-14 overall after taking two of three against Binghamton over the weekend. The Retrievers battled GW earlier this season, leaving Tucker Field with a 7-4 loss back on March 4. UMBC has won five of its last seven contests, including two victories over Georgetown and one against Maryland.
Danny Orr leads UMBC with a .324 average at the plate. He's tallied 22 total hits, 14 RBI and a .559 slugging percentage. Just behind is Jesiah Carpenter, who's slashing .323 with a team-best 30 hits and .435 on-base percentage. Leewood Molessa leads the team with 29 RBI and a slugging percentage of .713 this year, while also tallying nine home runs.
Dayton, who's coming off a three-game sweep at UMass last weekend, has won four games in a row, including a 6-4 midweek win against Akron last Tuesday. Prior to hosting GW, the Flyers will travel to Nashville to face the 17th-ranked Vanderbilt Commodores for the second time in program history. Dayton won the first matchup against the then-sixth-ranked Vandy, 8-5, in 2024, for the program's only Top 25 win since 2007.
Led by first-year head coach Scott Loiseau, Dayton is 17-17 overall this season and 7-5 in conference play to this point. The Flyers are led by Dyrenson Wouters, who's batting .452 from the dish with 47 hits and 31 runs scored. Michael DiMartini is batting .434 with a team-best 42 RBI and 62 hits, while Rylan Lujo has 59 hits and 14 doubles. J.J. Gatti and Peyton Malecha have both started in each weekend series for Dayton to this point. Gatti has a 3-3 record in 38.0 total innings, amassing 38 strikeouts, 19 earned runs and an ERA of 4.50. Malecha is 0-4 this season with a 10.57 ERA and 24 strikeouts in 30.2 innings.
