ARLINGTON, Va. – After working the bases loaded with no outs, Robbie Lavey's sacrifice fly in the 14th inning sent patrons at Tucker Field home happy as the George Washington baseball team topped Richmond, 4-3, in a series-opening marathon. The win moves GW to 19-18 overall this season and puts both teams at an even 7-9 in A-10 play.
The Buff & Blue scored the game's first two runs, the first coming in the second inning off a sac fly from Cristino Tufano to score Lavey. Later in the third, the GW Revs doubled the advantage with an RBI single up the middle from Jude Clough, plating Charlie Walsh.
Michael Foltz Jr. was spectacular for GW in his 10th start of the year, allowing just two runs in the outing, both of which came in the fifth. Foltz ultimately tossed nine full innings, tallying seven strikeouts and tossing 127 total pitches in the game, the second time he's thrown nine innings in an appearance this season.
With a chance to walk it off in the ninth, Walsh singled up the middle to give GW a base runner with two outs. Ellis Schwartz, the next batter up, laced a ball into the left-center gap, but Richmond's left fielder made a game-saving diving catch to end the inning and send GW to extras for the first time this season.
In the 10th, with the bases loaded and only one out, the Spiders lifted a fly ball to right for the second out. With a runner tagging from third base, Sam Gates delivered a strike to home plate, gunning down the runner for the inning-ending double play and maintaining the 2-2 tie.
After Richmond tallied one run in the 12th to take a 3-2 lead, GW answered back by reaching its first two batters via walks and advancing them to second and third off a sacrifice bunt from Tufano. One batter later, Greg Marmo singled up the middle, plating the tying run, but Ty Acker was cut down at the plate attempting to score from second, pushing the game to a 14th inning.
The Revolutionaries secured the win after loading the bases with no outs in the bottom of the inning. Lavey's sacrifice fly came on the first pitch of the at-bat, with Schwartz sliding past Richmond's catcher before he could make the tag for the out.
Gavin Miller was credited with the win after tossing 1.2 innings in relief. GW threw three pitchers in the game, with Max Haug joining Foltz and Miller on the mound. Miller finished with three strikeouts, while Haug notched four in 3.1 innings of work. Brian Reinke was charged with the loss, dropping him to 4-1 this season.
Both teams return to The Tuck tomorrow for Hometown Heroes Day at 1:00 p.m. Members of the Arlington County Sheriff's Office and Fire Department will be on-site to greet fans and share information about the work first responders do in our community.
