ARLINGTON, Va. – Behind stellar pitching from GW's staff, the Buff & Blue tallied a 6-1 win over Richmond to secure the weekend series. The Revolutionaries improved to 20-18 on the year and 8-9 in conference play.
Prior to the start of the game, Lt. Greg Scott of the Arlington County Sheriff's Office threw out the ceremonial first pitch for GW's annual Hometown Heroes Day. Members of the Arlington County Fire Department were also present at the game, greeting fans and passing out information to patrons at Tucker Field.
After delivering the game-winning RBI in the 14th inning of yesterday's 4-3 win, Robbie Lavey got GW on the scoreboard in the first inning, tallying a single into left field to score Ellis Schwartz.
Both teams went scoreless in the second and third frames before the Revolutionaries doubled their lead via an RBI single from Schwartz, plating Conlon Walker to make it 2-0. After 4.1 scoreless innings of work in his first start this season, Andrew Cutler allowed Richmond's only run of the day in the fifth inning. He ultimately tossed 4.2 frames in the outing, notching five strikeouts and allowing four hits.
In the home half of the fifth, GW got the run back via a sacrifice fly to center field from Cristino Tufano, scoring Lavey from third base. The Buff & Blue broke the game open later that same inning when Charlie Walsh cleared the bases for a three-run double, putting GW ahead 6-1 for good.
Cade Davis relieved Cutler in the fifth inning, eventually tossing 3.1 scoreless innings and allowing just one hit. He was ultimately credited with the win, moving him to 3-1 on the season and lowering his ERA to 3.03. Cutler leads the team in that category this year, with an ERA of 1.89 in 33.1 innings pitched. Matt Bruno was the third and final pitcher for GW on the day, tossing a scoreless ninth to nail down the win.
The win moves GW 1.5 games outside of the final tournament spot in the current A-10 standings after Fordham completed a three-game sweep over St. Bonaventure earlier on Saturday. GW looks to move within a game of the final seed tomorrow, as the Revolutionaries host Richmond at 12:00 p.m. for the series finale. Sunday's game will also be Bark in the Park at Tucker Field, all fans are encouraged to bring their four-legged friends and come cheer on the Buff & Blue.
