Baseball Overcomes Multiple Deficits to Sweep Richmond

ARLINGTON, Va. – Joined by numerous four-legged friends in the stands for Bark in the Park day, the George Washington baseball team completed a weekend sweep over Richmond, topping the Spiders, 9-7, on Sunday afternoon. The win moves GW's overall record to 21-18 on the year and pulls GW back to an even 9-9 in conference play, one game out of the final playoff spot with four weekends to go in A-10 action.
As he's done all weekend for the Buff & Blue, Robbie Lavey delivered an early blow to the Spiders, launching a two-run homer to left-center to put GW ahead in the first inning. Lavey finished the week with a team-best .533 batting average, tallying eight hits and four RBI over a four-game span.
The Spiders, however, answered right away, posting five runs off starter Declan Wywoda to take a 5-2 advantage in the second. In the home half of the inning, GW got two runs back, with the first coming off a double play ball from Charlie Walsh, scoring Ty Acker from third base. The second was an RBI single up the middle from Ellis Schwartz, scoring Cristino Tufano to make it 5-4 Richmond.
After the Spiders added one in the fourth to grow their advantage to 6-4, GW knotted the game in the bottom of the inning, courtesy of two more runs from Walsh and Schwartz. The first came off the bat of Walsh as he tallied an RBI groundout, unassisted to the first baseman. The second was a towering solo home run to right field from Schwartz, his team-leading seventh of the season and second this weekend, tying the game at six apiece.
Richmond reclaimed the lead in the sixth, notching a run off a deep pop-up to GW's shortstop, just enough to score the baserunner from third for a sacrifice fly. The 7-6 lead didn't last long, as Charlie Rogan drove in two runs in the home half of the inning to put GW up for good. Rogan tallied a single up the middle, scoring Schwartz from third. The Richmond center fielder lofted the ball back into the infield, unaware that Conlon Walker had rounded third and was attempting to score from first base. The Spiders' shortstop cut off the throw from center and gunned it home, but it was too late as Walker slid in just before the tag to put the Revolutionaries ahead.
GW added one more insurance run in the seventh inning, an RBI single up the middle to score Lavey. That was all the offense needed as the Buff & Blue pitching staff nailed down the win.
Graham Jeffries was credited with the win, moving him to 1-1 on the season after he tossed 2.0 innings in relief. Max Haug earned his first save of the season, tossing the final two innings and allowing just one hit. Six GW pitchers saw action in the game, combining for eight strikeouts.
The Revolutionaries return to action Tuesday, traveling to face Maryland Eastern Shore at 3:00 p.m. in Princess Anne, Md. No live stream will be available, but fans can follow live stats at GWsports.com.
