ARLINGTON, Va. – The George Washington baseball team posted six runs in the eighth inning to complete the comeback victory over crosstown foe Georgetown, topping the Hoyas, 8-7.
After a scoreless first inning, the Revolutionaries jumped ahead in the second, registering the game's first run via a sacrifice fly from Ty Acker. Scoring from third base was Ellis Schwartz. An inning later in the third, GW doubled its advantage with an RBI groundout from Robbie Lavey, scoring Sam Gates.
Georgetown posted two runs in the fourth inning, chasing GW starter Graham Jeffries after 3.1 innings of work. Jeffries struck out three batters in his first start of the season, tossing 56 total pitches. The Hoyas capitalized on GW's bullpen later in the game, posting two runs in the sixth and three more in the seventh to take a 7-2 lead. In total, GW used six different pitchers in the contest, the most this season.
Despite the five-run deficit, GW sparked some life into the game when Acker launched a two-run homer to right-center field, his first of the season. After Charlie Walsh reached on an error and Gates doubled to put runners on second and third, Cristino Tufano scored one on an infield single that deflected off the pitcher. That brought up Lavey, who sent a ball into the left-center gap, scoring two runs to tie the game at seven apiece.
Three batters later, after Schwartz lined out to left field to give GW two outs, Charlie Rogan sent a ball into center field that just barely snuck under the glove of the diving Hoya, getting down for a single that scored Lavey from second base. The run gave GW an 8-7 lead, completing a six-run eighth inning.
Declan Wywoda became GW's sixth pitcher of the day, entering at the start of the ninth inning. The first-year worked a 1-2-3 inning, collecting his first collegiate save. The win is GW's 98th against Georgetown all-time, the most wins against a single opponent in program history. The Revolutionaries lead the all-time series 98-48-1.
Rogan led the Buff & Blue offense with a 3-for-4 effort from the plate and one RBI. Gates went 2-for-3 with two runs scored, while Lavey finished with a hit and three RBI. Acker collected two hits, three RBI and a run scored for GW as well. Matt Bruno was credited with the win, the first of his collegiate career. The sophomore tossed two shutout innings, striking out one batter.
GW returns to Tucker Field on Friday, opening a three-game set with Maine at 2:30 p.m. The series extends into Saturday (1:00 p.m.) and Sunday (12:00 p.m.), with the opener and finale streamed on ESPN+.
