ARLINGTON, Va. – The George Washington baseball team secured a 3-1 series-opening victory on Friday behind a stellar showing from grad pitcher Michael Foltz Jr. Foltz went the distance, punching out seven and tossing 115 total pitches.
After dominating in seven innings of work last Friday against Holy Cross, Foltz followed it up with an even better showing, pitching GW's first complete game of the season. Foltz let up an unearned run in the second and was scotch-free the rest of the way, allowing just four hits on the afternoon. With the win, he moves to 2-1 on the season and his ERA drops to 2.16.
Following Maine's lone run in the second, GW's offense tied the game up in the fourth. After Cristino Tufano reached base on a walk and eventually advanced to second base, Jude Clough's single through the left side brought Tufano home to knot the contest.
An inning later, the Buff & Blue put up two more runs, with the first coming off the bat of Conlon Walker. Walker ripped a double into left field, scoring Ty Acker from first base to give GW its first lead of the day. Two batters later, Sam Gates brought in Walker via a single through the right side of the infield. That'd be all the offense GW needed as both teams came up empty in the final four innings.
On a day where offense was hard to come by, Gates led GW with a 2-for-4 effort from the plate. GW's remaining four hits came from Clough, Acker, Walker and Ellis Schwartz.
GW looks to secure the series tomorrow, hosting the Black Bears at 1:00 p.m. First pitch of Sunday's series finale has been adjusted to 1:00 p.m. due to frigid temperatures expected in the DMV area. Sunday's contest will still be streamed on ESPN+.
