Baseball Hosts UMass for Senior Day Weekend

WASHINGTON – The George Washington baseball team hosts UMass this weekend for its final home series of the 2024 season. The three-game set kicks off on Friday at 3:00 p.m., while Saturday's Senior Day contest is slated for 1:00 p.m. Sunday's series finale will also serve as Youth Day at Tucker Field and is scheduled for 12:00 p.m. All three contests will be carried on ESPN+.
BUSY WEEKEND AT THE TUCK
As the 2024 regular season begins to wind down, GW has multiple events happening this weekend against UMass. First, on Saturday, GW will honor the eight graduating members of its squad with a Senior Day ceremony. Players that will be recognized include Brett Young, Robby Wacker, McGwire Tuffy, Bryan Belo, Steve DiTomaso, Benny Wilson, Michael Foltz and Brandon Siegenthaler. The ceremony will take place on the field and is tentatively scheduled for 12:15 p.m., 45 minutes prior to the 1:00 p.m. first pitch. Along with the senior celebration, GW will also award the team's "I Got Your Back" award, which is handed out annually to the players that show exemplary performance when their teammates need them the most.
On Sunday, GW concludes play at The Tuck with Youth Day. The promotion includes $5 admission for all kids 12 and under, as well as the opportunity to run the bases after the game and join an exclusive autograph session with GW coaches and players. Sunday's game will be the final home game of 2024 for the Revolutionaries and is set for 12:00 p.m.
A-10 STANDINGS UPDATE
With two weekends left in the regular season, GW holds a 9-9 record in the Atlantic 10 and currently sit seventh in the conference standings. UMass, GW's opponent for this weekend, has quickly climbed the ranks with an 11-7 mark in conference action and wins in nine of their last 10 conference games. The Minutemen sit third in the current standings, one win behind Dayton who is second at 12-5, and two wins behind Saint Louis who sits atop with a 13-5 conference record.
At 9-9, GW sits one game behind Richmond and Fordham who occupy seeds five and six at 10-8, while also sitting one game above Saint Joseph's and Rhode Island who are currently in the eight and nine spots at 8-10 in conference action. With the top seven teams in the rankings advancing to the Atlantic 10 Championships later this month, GW is in prime position to punch their ticket to the postseason with series wins this weekend against UMass and next week at Saint Joseph's. SCOUTING THE MINUTEMEN
UMass enters the weekend 22-23 overall but sporting an 11-7 mark in the Atlantic 10 after catching fire in recent weeks. The Minutemen have won eight of their last nine contests and as mentioned above are winners in nine of their last 10 A-10 games. UMass is led by head coach Matt Reynolds who's in his seventh season in Amherst after serving as skipper for Washington College for three seasons from 2015-17. Reynolds has a 164-228-2 overall record as a head coach and has guided the Minutemen to a 105-178-1 mark during his time with the program.
On the field, UMass is led by Austin Burgess with a .315 batting average and 42 hits. He ranks third on the team with 33 RBI and his seven doubles are tied for tops on the squad. Burgess has tallied 36 runs scored in his 41 appearances this season, while recording a .449 on-base percentage after drawing 21 walks. Mike Gervasi is the team leader in home runs with 14. He also leads the squad in RBI with 39 and his .619 slugging percentage is top in the program. Despite solid offensive numbers as a team, UMass only has two batters above a .300 batting average. Joining Burgess in that category is Jack Beverly with a .305 average. He has 39 hits on the year with 26 RBI, seven doubles and six homers.
On the mound, UMass' pitching staff is led by Leif Bigelow with a 4-2 record and a 2.72 ERA. Bigelow has appeared in 16 contests this season, all of which were in relief. He's amassed 36.1 innings pitched and has 34 strikeouts on the year, all while holding opponents to just a .194 average at the plate. The team's top starter is Robbie O'Connor who's 2-5 in 11 starts this season. He holds a 4.89 ERA and has tossed 57.0 innings. O'Connor leads the squad with 40 strikeouts and has tossed the team's only two complete games.
