Baseball Topples UMass, Lavey Records Historic Day

As GW has done many times this season, it had an answer for any offense its opponents put on the board. That started in the first inning when the Minutemen got one run off starter Teddy Brennan, who was making his 12th start of the season. GW immediately got the opening run back, putting up three in the home half of the inning to take a lead that it would not give up the rest of the day. GW's first run of the contest came off an RBI double from Brett Young, while the second and third came via a two RBI single to center field from Robby Wacker.
After UMass got a run back in the third, GW's offense returned the favor and more in the bottom half of the inning, putting up four more to extend the Buff & Blue advantage to 7-2. GW's first of the inning came courtesy of Tim Nicholson's RBI single to left field, while McGwire Tuffy tallied his first RBI of the day two batters later off a single down the left field line. Nick Mullen put a cap on the inning a batter later when he ripped a deep double to the left center fence to score both Tuffy and Nicholson on the play.
Not going away without a fight, UMass tallied four runs across the fourth and sixth innings to cut GW's lead down to one at 7-6. However, the Buff & Blue bats came alive again in the sixth when Wacker drilled a towering three-run homer over the center field batter's eye to extend the lead back to four at 10-6. Scoring on Wacker's round tripper were Young and DiTomaso.
The Minutemen got their final two runs of the game in the seventh inning, scratching up reliever Brandon Siegenthaler with the pair of unearned runs after he took the mound for Brennan at the start of the inning. Brennan ultimately tossed six strong innings for the GW Revs, striking out four batters and earning his second victory of the season. Following UMass' two runs in the seventh it was all GW the rest of the way. The Revolutionaries proceeded to pour on seven unanswered runs to close out the game and seal the 17-8 win.
Lavey, who finished with a monster 6-for-6 day, collected his first RBI of the game in the seventh off a single to right field. Later in the inning, Young shot a double into right center to score DiTomaso, while Ellis Schwartz notched two RBI on a bases loaded single through the right side. In the eighth, Lavey put the finishing touches on his historic day with another RBI single, this time to right center. Scoring on the play was DiTomaso who tallied three hits himself in the contest. DiTomaso is now just four hits away from solo possession on second place on GW's all-time hits list. He currently has 287 hits in his GW career and would surpass Mike Bassett with 290 for second on the leaderboard.
Brett Young put the finishing touches on the offensive masterclass in the eighth, tallying two RBI off a double to right center field, pushing the score to 17-8.
Siegenthaler nailed down the victory for GW, pitching the final three innings and earning his team-leading sixth save of the season. The win was also significant for Head Coach Gregg Ritchie as he moves one win away from 300 for his GW career. Ritchie became GW's all-time wins leader earlier this season and has a chance to do something no other skipper in program history has done with one more victory.
All nine starters in GW's lineup walked away with at least one hit in the contest, headlined by Lavey who finished with six hits, four runs scored and two RBI. DiTomaso, Young and Nicholson all added three hits apiece, while DiTomaso added four runs scored for the Buff & Blue. Young threw in four RBI and three runs scored, while Nicholson added one run and one RBI to complete his line. Wacker led the team in RBI with five while also chipping in two runs on two hits. Tuffy finished with a multi-hit performance as well, while Gates and Schwartz each added one hit apiece. 22 hits are the most for the GW Revs this season, topping the previous season-high of 17 set on February 25th against Bryant.
GW continues its final home series of the season tomorrow against UMass at 1:00 p.m. Prior to first pitch, GW will honor the eight graduating members of its team with a Senior Day ceremony. The ceremony is slated to begin roughly 30 minutes prior to first pitch. Tomorrow's game will be broadcast live on ESPN+.
