WASHINGTON – Following a three-game sweep over UMass last weekend, the George Washington baseball team looks to continue its hot play into the final week of the 2024 season, traveling to Philadelphia, Pa., to battle Saint Joseph's. The season-finale series has high stakes for both teams as they vie for a spot in the 2024 Atlantic 10 Baseball Championship hosted in Tysons, Va. from May 21-25.
LAST TIME OUT
GW put together one of its best series of the season last weekend, tallying 35 runs on 48 hits in a three-game sweep over UMass. The Revolutionaries' 48 hits against the Minutemen marked the team's highest total in a three-game set this season. The offensive explosion came at a great time as GW makes a final push towards the postseason and a spot in the A-10 Championship. After winning Friday's contest by a score of 17-8 and securing a clutch 3-2 victory on Saturday, the Revolutionaries turned to Sunday's series finale looking to send the Minutemen back to Amherst empty handed. GW ultimately secured a 15-9 win in the game, tallying eight runs in the third and three in the seventh to punctuate a stellar weekend for the Buff & Blue offense. The win moved GW to 29-22 overall and 12-9 in conference action.
MULLEN NAMED A-10'S TOP ROOKIE
Following a stellar week of play, Nick Mullen was named the Atlantic 10 Rookie of the Week. Mullen finished with a .429 batting average across GW's four games and drove in a team-best eight RBI.
Mullen's hot offensive week started on Tuesday when the team traveled to 10th ranked Virginia for a mid-week clash. Mullen was a bright spot for GW offensively, tallying a hit and an RBI on the day. That momentum would serve him well as he tallied arguably his best series of the season against UMass. On Friday, Mullen recorded a 1-for-4 line that included two RBI and a run scored in GW's 17-8 win. Mullen was part of a GW lineup that saw all nine starters tally at least one hit, the first time the Revolutionaries have accomplished the feat this season. On Saturday, Mullen once again gave the Buff & Blue a spark offensively, tallying a solo home run in the fifth inning of GW's 3-2 win on Senior Day. The homer was Mullen's third of the season.
On Sunday in the series finale, Mullen concluded his big week with his best game yet, finishing 3-for-4 from the dish and racking up four RBI. He also tallied one run and a stolen base to fuel GW to a 15-9 win and the series sweep. GW posted 17 hits on Sunday with every starter once again recording at least one hit.
Mullen's final numbers on the week consisted of six hits, eight RBI, three runs, two doubles and a home run. Mullen started at shortstop for GW in all four contests, finishing with a perfect fielding percentage, eight putouts and 10 assists. His slugging percentage was a whooping .786 and he boasted an on-base percentage of .500.
A-10 STANDINGS UPDATE
Entering the final weekend of the season, GW sits in a tie for fourth at 12-9 in the Atlantic 10 standings. GW is currently equal with Richmond who ultimately holds the tiebreaker over the Revolutionaries due to having the edge in head-to-head matchups. Ahead of GW are Dayton and VCU, who occupy seeds two and three with a record of 13-7. Both teams have played one less game than the rest of the conference after having their April 21st game cancelled due to forecasted inclement weather. That gives both the Flyers and the Rams a 1.5 game lead over GW.
Saint Louis occupies the conference's top overall spot with a 15-6 record. The Billikens took two out of three games last week against Dayton in a battle between what was then the conference's top two teams overall. Behind GW in the standings are Saint Joseph's, GW's opponent this weekend, and UMass who both sit at 11-10. The Hawks and the Minutemen currently represent the final two teams into the A-10 Championship with the top seven in the conference advancing. Fordham is the current first team out, holding a 10-11 record in A-10 action. A full breakdown to the A-10 standings can be found here.
DITOMASO ON THE CUSP OF HISTORY
With his RBI single in the sixth inning of Sunday's win over UMass, Steve DiTomaso made more GW history by equaling Mike Bassett's mark of 290 career hits for second in program history. DiTomaso is now just one hit away from overtaking second place all-time and needs just nine more hits to equal Tom Zebroski's program record of 299 career hits. If DiTomaso were to record 10 more hits, he would overtake the record outright and become the first player in GW history to record 300 hits. GW has a minimum of three games left this weekend at Saint Joseph's and would be granted at least two more if the team advances to the A-10 Championships. The double-elimination format of the tournament grants all seven teams at least two contests in Tysons, Va.
SCOUTING THE HAWKS
Saint Joseph's enters the weekend 24-23 overall and riding a six-game winning streak after defeating Villanova on Tuesday afternoon, 8-6. The Hawks swept George Mason last weekend, doing so in dramatic fashion in Sunday's series finale. Starting pitcher Ryan DeSanto pitched eight no-hit innings against the Patriots, ultimately seeing his bid for history erased on a lead-off single to left field in the ninth. DeSanto would ultimately allow a run later in the inning, finishing his day with a line of 8.1 innings, one earned run and nine strikeouts.
SJU is led by Head Coach Fritz Hamburg, who's in his 16th season with the program. Hamburg has a 363-396-2 record with the Hawks and has led the team to two 30-win seasons during his tenure. Hamburg is the program's all-time leader in coaching victories and led the Hawks to its first Atlantic 10 regular season championship in 2023.
Offensively, the Hawks are led by Conlan Wall with a .333 batting average in 165 at-bats. He has 55 hits this season including nine doubles and two triples. He's also tallied 29 RBI and holds a team-best on-base percentage of .511 after drawing 48 walks this season. Ryan Weingartner is the team leader in RBI with 51. He has a .316 batting average on the year and a team-high .622 slugging percentage. He's belted 14 home runs, joining Ryan Picollo (13) and Owen Petrich (10) as the only players on the squad with double-digit home run numbers.
On the mound, SJU's projected starter for Thursday's game is Domenic Picone. He holds a 5.43 ERA on the season with a 4-2 record. He's started in 11 games this season, tossing 56.1 total innings in 2024. Picone has allowed 34 earned runs while tallying 69 strikeouts. On Saturday, Will McCausland is the projected started for Saint Joseph's. He holds a 3-4 record in 13 starts, posting a 5.27 ERA this season. In 68.1 total innings, McCausland has allowed 40 earned runs and leads the team with 81 strikeouts. Sunday's projected starter is still TBA.
