PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – The George Washington baseball team dropped the opening matchup of a three-game series with Saint Joseph's on Thursday afternoon. The Revolutionaries were held to just five hits in the contest, falling by a final score of 9-0.
Coming on the heels of six-straight victories, Saint Joseph's started the game hot with three runs in the first inning. Despite the early troubles, Teddy Brennan settled in nicely on the mound to hold the Hawks scoreless across the next three frames. GW's offense couldn't find its flow, however, failing to get a baserunner until the third inning and picking up its first hit of the game in the sixth.
After Brennan allowed another run in the fifth, he was eventually pulled for Jarrett Korson at the start of the sixth inning. Brennan exited with a solid line of five innings pitched. Of his four runs allowed only three of them were earned and he also punched out three Saint Joseph's batters.
Trailing 4-0 in the seventh, Steve DiTomaso made history once again by tallying his 291st career hit with a lead-off single to second base. The hit moved DiTomaso into sole possession of second on GW's all-time hits leaderboard, passing Mike Bassett who recorded 290 with the Buff & Blue. DiTomaso is now just nine hits away from equaling the program record of 299 set by Tom Zebroski.
Saint Joseph's put the game away in the eighth inning, recording five runs in the frame to stretch its advantage to 9-0. GW's offense settled for just five hits, with all of them coming from different players. Along with DiTomaso, Brett Young, Robby Wacker, McGwire Tuffy and Nick Mullen each tallied a hit apiece in the game.
Out of GW's pen, Korson had a solid showing with two scoreless innings in relief. He tallied one strikeout and allowed three hits. Brayden Kurtz also went scoreless in 0.2 innings, closing out the final two outs for GW in the eighth inning. Brennan was charged with the loss for the Buff & Blue, dropping him to 2-5 on the season. Domenic Picone earned the win for the Hawks. He moves to 5-2 in 2024.
Both teams return to Hawk Hill tomorrow for a 1:00 p.m. matchup. Fans can follow live stats at GWsports.com. No live stream will be available.
