PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – The George Washington baseball team secured a spot in next week's Atlantic 10 Baseball Championship with a split in today's doubleheader at Saint Joseph's. GW's first postseason game will be Tuesday, May 21, while final seedings and game times are still TBA. GW finishes the regular season at 30-24 and 13-11 in A-10 action.
GAME ONE
With both team's vying for a spot to the postseason, the bats were quiet early on. GW tallied just two hits through the first four innings, while SJU recorded three hits in the opening four frames. The Buff & Blue offense finally broke through in the fifth inning with the first run of the game. After Ellis Schwartz tallied a leadoff single to third base, Nick Mullen recorded a two-out double to right center to put GW up 1-0.
GW's lead would be short lived as Saint Joseph's got a run of its own in the bottom half of the inning. The run would be Michael Foltz's only run given up in the game, an unearned RBI double to left center. Despite the offensive surge in the fifth, the bats went quite again through the sixth, seventh and eighth. Foltz settled back in and pitched 7.2 stellar innings for the Revolutionaries. He recorded eight strikeouts on the day and only allowed five hits. The start is Foltz's fifth of seven innings or more this year and the second in a row after last week's 3-2 win over UMass on Senior Day.
With the game tied in the top of the ninth, GW's offense came up clutch with the first three batters reaching safely to load the bases. McGwire Tuffy put the Revolutionaries ahead for good with an RBI groundout to second base, scoring Robby Wacker from third. Later in the inning, Mullen gave GW two more insurance runs with a two-RBI single through the left side to extend the advantage to 4-1. Scoring on Mullen's single were Tim Nicholson and Schwartz.
Brandon Siegenthaler nailed down the GW win with a clean ninth inning, securing the team's 30th win over the season. Siegenthaler also earned the win for GW after securing one out in the eighth, moving him to 6-2 on the season. Siegenthaler finishes the regular season with six wins and six saves, leading the team in both categories.
GAME TWO
The nightcap started much like game one of the doubleheader with both offenses struggling to find early production. After Saint Joseph's got on the board with a run in the third, GW answered right back with a score of its own in the top of the fourth. The Buff & Blue run came courtesy of an RBI single through the right side from Tuffy, scoring Wacker from third base. Unfortunately, the run would be GW's last of the game as they went quiet for the remainder of the contest.
Saint Joseph's tallied one run in the sixth to take a 2-1 lead, then added two more in the seventh to grow the advantage to 4-1. Despite ultimately taking the loss, Graham Jeffries, GW's game two starter, had a stellar day on the hill. He tossed six total innings, allowing just two hits and giving up two runs. Both runs were unearned and he notched four strikeouts. Andrew Cutler also had a solid showing in relief, tossing one scoreless inning for the Buff & Blue. The win for Saint Joseph's also secures them a spot in next week's A-10 Championship.
The rest of the Atlantic 10 wraps up regular season action tomorrow. Once all games are complete, the A-10 will announce the official tournament bracket with official seedings and game times. Follow GWsports.com for the latest postseason information.
