Baseball Falls in Opening Game of A-10 Championship
5/21/2024 5:04:00 PM | Baseball
After both teams went scoreless in the first inning, GW got the offense going courtesy of a leadoff home run to left center field from Brett Young. The homer was Young's second of the season and his 36th RBI of the year. Later in the inning, McGwire Tuffy doubled the GW lead with an RBI single to center field. Scoring on the play from second base was Ellis Schwartz.
After Teddy Brennan, GW's starter in the contest, recorded the first two outs in the bottom half of the second inning, the next nine Spiders' batters would reach base safely in what became an eight-run inning for Richmond. Brennan was ultimately pulled for reliever Brandon Siegenthaler after facing 11 batters in the frame. Siegenthaler managed to sit down the first batter he faced to end the Richmond run.
The Spiders tacked on one more run in the third inning courtesy of a solo home run to center field. GW wouldn't go away without a fight, recording two more runs in the fourth inning to make it a 9-4 contest. The first came via an RBI double from Nick Mullen that scored Tim Nicholson. The second came one batter later off a sacrifice fly to center field from Sam Gates. Scoring on Gates' sac fly was Tuffy.
Those would be the final two runs of the game for GW as Richmond closed the contest with two runs in the sixth and one in the seventh to secure a 12-4 win. GW finished the contest with 12 hits, six of which came from the bottom three hitters in the lineup. Mullen recorded a 3-for-4 day from the nine hole with an RBI, while Tuffy finished 2-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored in the eight spot. Young finished with a solid 3-for-4 line with an RBI and a run scored as well.
The victory advances the Spiders to a meeting with top-ranked Saint Louis tomorrow at 11:00 a.m. With the loss, GW now awaits the results of the VCU-Saint Joseph's and Dayton-UMass matchups. If VCU and Dayton win their respective games, GW will play at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday against the loser of what would be a second round game between the Rams and the Flyers. If either Saint Joseph's or UMass win on Tuesday, then GW will play on Wednesday night at 7:00 p.m. against the lowest seeded loser of a first round game.
