
Baseball Battles Dayton in A-10 Championship Elimination Game

WASHINGTON – After falling in an opening round matchup to Richmond, the George Washington baseball team turns its focus to an elimination game with Dayton on Thursday at 11:00 a.m. at Capital One Park in Tysons, Va.
LAST TIME OUT
GW kicked-off the 2024 Atlantic 10 Baseball Championship with an opening round matchup against Richmond on Tuesday morning. After going ahead by two runs in the second, the Spiders put up eight of its own in the home half of the same frame. GW was never able to dig itself out of the deficit, falling by a final score of 12-4.
GW's offense was led by Brett Young who finished the day 3-for-4 including a solo home run in the second inning that got the scoring started for both teams. Nick Mullen also went 3-for-4, registering an RBI double for the Buff & Blue in the fourth. McGwire Tuffy finished with a multi-hit game with a 2-for-4 line and an RBI. Tuffy's RBI came in the second inning, giving GW the early 2-0 advantage.
A-10 CHAMPIONSHIP UPDATE
If GW defeats the Flyers, the team will play another elimination game at 7:00 p.m. Thursday night. Two wins to keep GW's title hopes alive would result in yet another elimination game Friday at 3:00 p.m. for the right to play on Championship Saturday, when the Buff & Blue would also have to win twice to be crowned champs. ALL-CONFERENCE HONOREES
GW earned five Atlantic 10 All-Conference honors, the league announced on Wednesday. Michael Foltz headlined the group with a First Team selection as a starting pitcher, while Tuffy (second base) and Robbie Lavey (designated hitter) were both Second Team honorees. Lavey was also picked as an All-Rookie Team selection, while Brandon Siegenthaler earned Academic All-Conference honors.
Foltz was lights-out all season on the hill for GW, starting in 12 games and finishing with a 4-1 record. His 3.18 ERA ranked fourth-best in the A-10, while throwing a total of 65 innings this season. Foltz piled up 49 strikeouts and also led the conference in opponent batting average at .170.
Tuffy, a graduate transfer from Quinnipiac, made an instant impact in GW's lineup this season. Starting in 49 games at second base, Tuffy registered a .313 batting average and recorded 52 total hits. He notched 12 extra-base hits which included 10 doubles and two home runs. He also scored 29 runs for the GW offense and drove in 26 RBI on the season. His on-base percentage finished at .431 during the regular season after drawing 19 walks, and he stole 11 bases on 15 attempts.
Lavey, was an immediate contributor upon arriving in Foggy Bottom as a rookie this season, appearing in 46 total games, mainly serving as the team's DH but also picking up time as a catcher as well. Lavey recorded a .325 batting average with 51 total hits on the year. He drove in 28 RBI, while tallying 32 runs scored. He finished the season with a .452 slugging percentage and drew 23 walks to finish with an on-base percentage of .410. Lavey stole seven bases on nine attempts and registered 16 multi-hit games in 2024.
Siegenthaler got it done both on the field and in the classroom this season for GW. Pursuing a graduate certificate in Sport Management, he recorded a cumulative GPA of 3.90. On the field, Siegenthaler was a steady anchor in the GW pen. He appeared in 19 total games, making two starts on the mound. He led GW in wins and finished fourth in the conference with a 6-2 record. He also tallied a team-best six saves which ranks third in the A-10 and 65th in the nation.
SCOUTING THE FLYERS
Following its 11-3 loss to second-seeded VCU on Wednesday, Dayton enters Thursday's elimination game with a 33-21 overall record. The Flyers finished 14-9 in the Atlantic 10 during the regular season, earning them the third seed in the conference tournament. Dayton is led by head coach Jayson King who's in his seventh season with the program and 27th year overall. King has a 165-173-1 record with the Flyers and an 840-511-4 mark as a D1 skipper. Dayton last won the A-10 crown in 2012, tying with Saint Louis for the regular season title but going on to with the postseason tournament.
