TYSONS, Va. – Michael Foltz's complete game on Thursday afternoon propelled GW to a 9-1 win over third-seeded Dayton and advanced the Revolutionaries to the Atlantic 10 Baseball Championship consolation semifinals. The Buff & Blue will now play tonight at 7:00 p.m. against the winner of the Saint Louis vs. Saint Joseph's contest.
After Dayton registered the first run of the game in the top of the second, GW answered right back with a score of its own in the bottom half of the same inning. The Buff & Blue run came via an RBI groundout from McGwire Tuffy, scoring Ellis Schwartz from third base.
In the third, GW's offense heated up, scoring three runs in the frame to take a 4-1 advantage. The first came off the bat of Steve DiTomaso, who reached first on a throwing error from the Dayton third baseman. Sam Gates scored from third on the play to give GW a lead they would never relinquish. Later in the frame, Tim Nicholson drew a bases-loaded walk to bring in the third run of the game. Nicholson's at-bat was a long seven-pitch affair with the walk being earned on a full count. One batter later, Tuffy picked up his second RBI of the day courtesy of a single up the middle.
One inning later, GW added three more runs with the first two coming off an RBI triple from Brett Young. Young shot the ball down the first base line and it rolled all the way to the wall, allowing him to reach third standing up and scoring both runners on the bases. Later in the frame, Robby Wacker brought Young home on an RBI groundout to the shortstop, making GW's lead 7-1.
While the offense continued to roll, starting pitcher Michael Foltz kept the Flyers quiet with six total strikeouts in the contest. Foltz didn't allow another run after the second inning and pitched his first complete game of the season. He tossed 127 pitches in the game, his highest total of 2024.
The Buff & Blue offense gave Foltz two more insurance runs late in the game with the first coming in the seventh inning. Nicholson tallied an infield RBI single to score Young once again, while the final run came in the eighth when Young tallied a bloop infield single to the shortstop to score Sam Gates.
The GW offense tallied 12 total hits in the game, while Foltz kept Dayton to just seven base knocks. Five GW Revs finished with a multi-hit performance - Gates, Young, Schwartz, Nicholson and Nick Mullen. Young tallied three RBI and scored one run, while Nicholson and Tuffy both added two RBI.
