ARLINGTON, Va. – The George Washington baseball team dropped a series-opening matchup with conference-leading Saint Louis on Friday afternoon, 8-5. The Revolutionaries fell to 23-18 on the season and 6-7 in A-10 action.
The Billikens greeted GW with two runs in the first inning to grab the early advantage. Teddy Brennan, GW's starter in the game, would settle in and keep SLU off the scoreboard in the second inning before allowing another run in the third. Despite the early 3-0 deficit, GW found some offensive life with two runs of its own in the home half of the third. Brett Young got things started with a double down the left field line, scoring Robbie Lavey from first base. Later in the inning, Ellis Schwartz registered an infield single, scoring Young and cutting the deficit to just one at 3-2.
In the fifth, Saint Louis got on the board again with a single run, but the Buff & Blue matched the score in the sixth with a run of their own. GW's tally in the sixth came courtesy of an RBI double from McGwire Tuffy to right center, scoring Robby Wacker.
Saint Louis broke through in the seventh, putting up four runs and growing its advantage to 8-4. GW starter Teddy Brennan ended his outing with 6.1 total innings, allowing just three earned runs and striking out six. He tossed 124 pitches on the day. With its back against the wall, GW managed to register two more runs in the game but couldn't complete the comeback. The first came in the seventh off the bat of Steve DiTomaso, who shot an RBI single up the middle, while the second came in the eighth via a sacrifice fly from Sam Gates. Gates, who finished 1-for-4 on the day, pushed his on-base streak to 18 games, the longest streak for GW this season.
Aside from Gates, GW's offense was paced by Steve DiToamso, who finished 3-for-5. DiTomaso is now just five hits away from moving into third on GW's all-time hits leaderboard. DiTomaso also registered an RBI on the day, while Lavey finished 2-for-4 with two runs scored. Wacker notched two hits and two runs scored for GW, while Schwartz recorded two hits and an RBI.
GW continues its series with Saint Louis tomorrow at 1:00 p.m. at Tucker Field. The contest will be carried live on ESPN+.
