Baseball Welcomes Saint Louis for Pivotal A-10 Series

WASHINGTON – The George Washington baseball team welcomes Saint Louis to Tucker Field this weekend for a three-game A-10 series beginning on Friday. The series opener is set for 3:00 p.m. with Saturday's contest slated for 1:00 p.m., and Sunday set for noon. Friday and Saturday's games will be aired on ESPN+.
LAST TIME OUT
GW got a preview of the site for the 2024 Atlantic 10 Championship by visiting Georgetown for a midweek non-conference clash on Tuesday. The Hoyas, who recently moved to Capital One Park in Tysons, Va., this season, topped GW by a score of 13-5. Despite the loss, Sam Gates extended his on-base streak to a season-high 17 games. Gates' streak is now the longest for GW this season, topping Ellis Schwartz's string of 16-straight earlier this year. Along with Gates, Robby Wacker has an on-base streak of 14 games, while Robbie Lavey and Brett Young have both reached base 12 games in a row. Currently, GW's longest hitting streak is held by Schwartz with seven.
DITOMASO DOES IT AGAIN
In what has become a theme in recent weeks, Steve DiTomaso moved up the GW all-time hits leaderboard again on Tuesday, Against the Hoyas, DiTomaso recorded three hits to move in fourth place on the all-time rankings. DiToamso's hit total now sits at 274, passing Tom Shanley who now ranks fifth with 273. DiTomaso is just eight away from surpassing Joey Bartosic, who sits in third with 281.
A-10 STANDINGS UPDATE
With just four weeks left in the regular season, GW currently ranks sixth in the Atlantic 10 standings with a conference record of 6-6. The GW Revs are tied with Saint Joseph's for the six-spot and are only two games behind Saint Louis who occupy the top spot in the rankings with an 8-4 A-10 record. When looking at GW's remaining slate of games, the Buff & Blue will face off with Saint Louis who is currently ranked No. 1, VCU who sits in a tie for second, UMass who is tied for eighth and Saint Joseph's who is tied with GW for sixth. Overall, GW is one of just four teams to eclipse the 20-win mark this season, joining Saint Louis (27-10), Dayton (25-15) and VCU (25-15).

Saint Louis enters the weekend 27-10 overall and 8-4 in the A-10 after beating Lindenwood 3-1 on Tuesday afternoon. Last weekend, the Billikens dropped two of three games at Fordham, the second A-10 series Saint Louis has lost this season. The Billikens are led by head coach Darin Hendrickson who's in his 17th season with Saint Louis. Hendrickson has served as an NCAA head coach for 25 years including stops at NCAA D-III Fontbonne and D-II Central Missouri. Since taking over the Billikens' program prior to the 2008 season, Hendrickson has led Saint Louis to a 506-387-1 record and is the program's all-time winningest head coach. Under Hendrickson's guidance, the Billikens have won the Atlantic 10 regular season title five times and the Atlantic 10 Tournament Championship on three occasions.
On the field, Saint Louis is led by Patrick Clohisy with a .396 batting average and a team-high 57 hits. Clohisy has 46 runs on the season and has driven home 42 RBI. He leads the team with a .688 slugging percentage and holds an on-base percentage of .500. Clohisy is nearly perfect in stolen bases on the year, nabbing 20 out of 21 attempts. Saint Louis' offense is also led by Cole Smith with a .348 batting average and 49 hits. Smith has 38 RBI and 30 runs scored in the team's 37 games. His on-base percentage sits at .438 and he's drawn 22 walks in 2024.
On the mound, Jackson Holmes leads the team with 10 starts on the year. Holmes has a 4.39 ERA and 38 strikeouts in 53.1 total innings. The team's top reliever is Josh Cunningham who has an ERA of 1.40 in 10 appearances. Cunningham holds opposing batters to a .136 average and has 14 strikeouts in 19.1 total innings.
