Baseball Rallies Behind Bullpen Brilliance to Beat Billikens, 5-3

ARLINGTON, Va. - After an hour and 45 minute rain delay held up the first pitch of the second game of a critical weekend series against Saint Louis, the Revolutionaries and Billikens finally took the field and played through some scattered drizzle, but the conditions didn't damper the GW Revs day.
After falling behind 2-0 in the first, the GW bullpen, spearheaded by Brandon Siegenthaler and Andrew Cutler, was masterful against the SLU bats, allowing their compadres in the home dugout to rally.
The Buff & Blue scratched one run across in the third when McGwire Tuffy scored on a balk after reaching on a double. Siegenthaler then authored a shutdown inning in the fourth to continue the momentum for George Washington, setting the stage for a fourth-inning rally that plated three and boosted GW up by a 4-2 margin. A Robby Wacker single drove in Jude Clough to knot the score before a Nick Mullen knock plated both Wacker and Ellis Schwartz to account for the two-run lead.
The transfer from Villanova, Siegenthaler, who coincidentally earned the first win of his career against Saint Louis in 2020, pitched into the seventh, striking out four while only allowing one hit, three walks and one run over 5.1 frames to earn the win for GW and improve to 4-2 on the year. His cause was aided in the bottom of the seventh, after the Billikens drew to within 4-3 in the top half, when Tuffy crossed home again, this time after a Brett Young single with two outs.
Andrew Cutler earned the save for his ballclub, dominating his foes over 2.2 scoreless innings. He yielded just one hit while K-ing a pair, continuing a sterling rookie season for the first-year from Fairfield, Connecticut.
At the plate, Robbie Lavey, Clough, Wacker and Tuffy all had multiple hits.
Now at 7-7 in A-10 play this season, the rubber match tomorrow between these teams at noon will dictate if GW is able to once again climb over .500 in conference play, with just three Atlantic 10 series remaining in the hunt for the championship. Currently tied with UMass for sixth in the standings, seven teams will qualify for the conference tournament next month in Tysons, Va.
