ARLINGTON, Va. – The George Washington baseball team dropped its series-finale matchup with Saint Louis on Sunday afternoon, 4-2. The loss moves GW to 24-19 overall and 7-8 in A-10 action.
The Buff & Blue offense got out to a solid start, tallying one run in the first inning off an RBI single from Ellis Schwartz. Scoring on the play was Brett Young who earlier in the inning stole third base, GW's first of four stolen bases on the day.
Jarrett Korson, GW's starter for the game, settled in nicely to keep Saint Louis off the board through the first two innings of play. Prior to the contest, Korson was honored on-field as the recipient of this year's Warren Fulton Memorial Award, which honors the life and legacy of former GW baseball player Warren Fulton who tragically lost his life during his senior season in 1988. Every year since Fulton's untimely passing, the GW baseball program has presented the Warren Fulton Memorial Award to the player who best exemplifies the spirit, teamwork and sportsmanship that was displayed by Warren.
After tossing two strong innings to open, Korson was eventually pulled in the third after allowing two runs to put Saint Louis ahead 2-1. Relieving Korson was Andrew Cutler, who earned the save in yesterday's 5-3 victory over the Billikens. Cutler tossed 1.2 innings for the Revolutionaries, allowing one run in the fourth inning to extend the Billikens' lead to 3-1. However, GW quickly got the run back later in the inning when Nick Mullen reached on a fielding error by Saint Louis' shortstop, allowing Steve DiTomaso to score from third base.
Neither team registered any offense from that point until the sixth when Saint Louis added one more run to make it 4-2. With their backs against the wall, GW was unable to push across any more runs late in the game, dropping the series finale. Despite the loss, GW got solid pitching appearances from Tyler Blankenship and Benny Wilson late in the game. Both pitchers threw two innings, allowing no earned runs and just two total hits between them.
Offensively, GW finished with six total hits, all of which came from different players. Schwartz tallied the team's lone RBI, while Young and DiTomaso each added a run scored.
The Revolutionaries return to action on Tuesday to battle Delaware on the road at 6:30 p.m. Live coverage of the contest will be available on FloSports. GW's next A-10 series will take place next weekend at VCU. The Buff & Blue battle the Rams starting on Friday at 6:00 p.m.
