SALISBURY, Md. – The George Washington baseball team snapped its three-game losing streak on Wednesday afternoon with a dominant showing against Maryland Eastern Shore. The GW Revs trounced the Hawks, 13-3, in seven innings to move to 21-15 on the season.
GW jumped on top quickly, recording four runs in the first inning to capture an early advantage. Brett Young started things off with a two-RBI single to center field, scoring Jude Clough and Robby Lavey on the play. Later in the inning, Ellis Schwartz doubled the GW lead with a two-RBI single of his own to center. Steve DiTomaso and Young scored on the hit. DiTomaso, who's been climbing the program's all-time hits leaderboard all season, made another significant jump in today's contest. DiTomaso surpassed Robbie Metz ('18) for sixth all-time in hits, then pulled into a tie with Ryan Dacey ('00) for fifth on the list later in the game. DiTomaso now has 267 career hits and needs just six more to equal Tom Shanley ('06) in fourth with 273.
After UMES tallied three runs across the second and third innings, GW got back on track with three runs in the fourth. Young delivered in the clutch again with a bases loaded hit by pitch, then it was DiTomaso's time to shine with an RBI double down the left field line. Scoring on DiTomaso's two-bagger were Clough and Sam Gates. Despite not tallying a hit in the contest, Gates extended his on-base streak to 13 games after drawing a walk in the fourth inning. Gates' streak is the longest on the team.
It was all GW the rest of the way, as the team scored four more runs in the sixth and seventh to evoke the mercy rule in the contest. In the sixth, Bryan Belo tallied an RBI single through the right side to score Young to make the score 9-3. Schwartz got things started in the seventh with an RBI infield single, while Belo tallied two more RBI in the inning off a single. McGwire Tuffy tallied GW's final run of the game via an RBI fielder's choice.
With the game only lasting seven innings, Brandon Siegenthaler earned the win on the mound for the Buff & Blue after opening the game. Siegenthaler allowed one earned run and struck out three batters in his second victory of the season. Following Siegenthaler, GW used six different pitchers the rest of the way. Notably, Max Haug tossed two shutout innings with five strikeouts, while Bradyen Kurtz tossed one frame and punched out two batters.
Offensively, GW saw four players record multi-hit games. Young led the way with a 2-for-2 day that included three RBI and three runs scored. DiTomaso finished 2-for-2 with two RBI and three runs, while also drawing two walks. Schwartz added a 2-for-4 line with three RBI and a run scored, while Belo also went 2-for-4 with four RBI. Nick Mullen finished 1-for-2 with a run scored but reached base four times on the day after drawing three walks. Robbie Lavey also reached base three times, all on walks.
GW returns to A-10 action this weekend for a three-games series with Rhode Island. The Rams travel to the DMV for a contest on Friday at 3:00 p.m. and will stick around for a 1:00 p.m. matchup on Saturday and a noon contest on Sunday. Friday's and Saturday's games will be aired live on ESPN+.
