WASHINGTON – The George Washington baseball team returns to Tucker Field this weekend for a pivotal three-game A-10 series with Rhode Island starting on Friday. The Revolutionaries battle the Rams in the series-opener at 3:00 p.m., then return on Saturday at 1:00 p.m. and conclude the weekend on Sunday at noon.
LAST TIME OUT
GW got back to its winning ways on Wednesday afternoon, defeating UMES in seven innings, 13-3. The win snapped the Buff & Blue's three-game losing streak and completed the season sweep over the Hawks. GW jumped out to an early lead after recording four runs in the first inning. Brett Young and Ellis Schwartz both tallied two-RBI singles to give the Buff & Blue its early advantage.
After UMES tallied three runs across the second and third innings, GW got back on track with three runs in the fourth. Young delivered in the clutch again with a bases loaded hit by pitch, then it was Steve DiTomaso's time to shine with an RBI double down the left field line. Despite not tallying a hit in the contest, Sam Gates extended his on-base streak to 13 games after drawing a walk in the fourth inning. Gates' streak is the longest on the team.
It was all GW the rest of the way, as the Buff & Blue scored four more runs in the sixth and seventh to evoke the mercy rule. In the sixth, Bryan Belo tallied an RBI single through the right side to score Young to make the score 9-3. Schwartz got things started in the seventh with an RBI infield single, while Belo tallied two more RBI in the inning off a single. McGwire Tuffy tallied GW's final run of the game via an RBI fielder's choice.
