RICHMOND, Va. – Despite a strong offensive showing, the George Washington baseball team was unable to overcome pitching struggles in an 11-8 series-opening loss at Richmond on Friday afternoon.
The Revolutionaries opened the scoring, plating three runs in the second inning to take the early advantage. Nick Mullen got things started for GW, shooting a double down the left field line to score Robby Wacker from second base. One batter later, Sam Gates singled to right field to score McGwire Tuffy and Mullen to extend GW's lead. All three runs were scored with two outs in the inning, an early theme for the GW offense.
After Richmond got one back on a solo home run in the bottom of the second, GW piled on three more runs with two outs to extend the Buff & Blue advantage to 6-1. Wacker got in on the action again with a bloop double to left field. Scoring on the play were Charlie Rogan and Steve DiTomaso. One batter later, Tuffy singled to center field to bring Wacker back home for GW's sixth two-out run of the day.
Richmond wouldn't go away quietly, getting two more runs off starter Jarrett Korson in the third inning. Korson, who made his fourth start of the season in today's contest, pitched 4.1 innings for GW and allowed five earned runs. He also struck out six of the 20 batters he faced on the day.
GW scored its seventh run of the contest in the fourth inning, capitalizing on a single to left field from Brett Young to score Gates.
Things quickly went south for GW in the fifth inning when Richmond stroked a solo home run to lead off the inning, followed up by a double to left field. Korson was relieved by the bullpen which proceeded to allow seven more runs across during the inning before Andrew Cutler got GW out of the frame. In total, Richmond tallied eight runs in the inning to take an 11-7 lead.
After the offensive fireworks through the first five frames, both teams' bats quieted down for much of the remaining contest. GW made a run at a comeback in the ninth by pushing across a run off an RBI groundout from Jude Clough, but that was all the offense the Spiders would allow. Brayden Kurtz was ultimately charged with the loss for GW, moving him to 2-3 on the season. Brian Reinke earned the win for Richmond, his first of the season. Cole Hentschel was credited with the save for the Spiders, his fifth in 2024.
Gates led the GW offense with three hits in four tries to go along with two RBI and one run. Wacker, the former Richmond transfer, finished with two runs and RBI on two hits, while Tuffy recorded an RBI and one run off his multi-hit performance. Robbie Lavey went 2-for-4 from the dish for GDUB, while Nick Mullen added a run and an RBI. After giving up a run in the fifth, Cutler settled in to throw 2.2 solid innings. He allowed just the one earned run on two total hits. He also struck out four Spiders.
The series rolls on tomorrow for a 1:00 p.m. contest at Pitt Field. Live coverage of the contest will be available on ESPN+.
