RICHMOND, Va. – The George Washington baseball team dropped a closely-contested matchup with Richmond, falling by a final score of 3-2. The Revolutionaries conclude the series with the Spiders on Sunday at 12:00 p.m.
Both starters were rolling early, keeping the game scoreless through the first six innings of action. GW didn't pick up its first baserunner of the game until the fifth inning, seeing Brett Young and Ellis Schwartz both single in the frame. Despite the offensive life, GW couldn't capitalize and put any runs on the board. Teddy Brennan, GW's starter in the contest, was lights out on the mound. Brennan tossed seven scoreless innings, striking out six batters and only allowing five hits.
Brennan was given run support before he exited in the seventh when Schwartz ripped an RBI single into right field, scoring Steve DiTomaso on the play. An inning later, the Buff & Blue doubled its lead to two when Tim Nicholson recorded an RBI groundout to short stop. Coming home to score from third base was Nick Mullen. Following Brennan's departure, GW turned to Brandon Siegenthaler in the eighth. Siegenthaler navigated GW through the inning with no damage, maintaining the team's 2-0 lead heading to the ninth.
Despite the lead, GW was unable to maintain it in the final inning, allowing six of Richmond's seven batters to reach safely. The Spiders tallied the winning run off a bunt single, scoring a runner from third base to seal the victory.
Offensively, GW was led by Schwartz who finished 2-for-4 with an RBI, while Brett Young went 2-for-3 with a run. Robbie Lavey finished with two hits for GW, while Mullen chipped in a hit and a run.
The Revolutionaries conclude the series with Richmond tomorrow at Pitt Field. First Pitch is set for 12:00 p.m. with live coverage available on ESPN+.
