Baseball Drops Series Finale at Richmond

RICHMOND, Va. – The George Washington baseball team dropped its series finale at Richmond on Sunday afternoon, 12-2. The Buff & Blue move to 20-15 overall this season and 4-5 in A-10 action.
The Spiders jumped out to the early lead, getting two runs in the first inning. GW battled back with in the second when Ellis Schwartz blasted a solo home run to right field. The blast was Schwartz's third this season and cut the Richmond lead to 2-1. In the bottom half of the inning, Richmond got the run back via a solo home run of their own to extend the lead back to two runs.
Across the fourth and fifth innings, Richmond pulled away from the Buff & Blue. The Spiders tallied seven runs in the fourth and one more in the fifth to open an 11-1 advantage. GW got another run back in the sixth but couldn't muster any more offense down the stretch. GW's run in the sixth came via an RBI groundout from Nick Mullen, scoring Robby Wacker from third base.
Offensively, Wacker and McGwire Tuffy led the way with two hits apiece. Mullen, Schwartz, Steve DiTomaso, Robbie Lavey and Sam Gates each added one hit apiece for GDUB as well. On the mound, Shugy Klein had a solid outing in relief. Klein pitched one scoreless inning, striking out one batter and sitting the Spiders down in order.
The Revolutionaries return to action Wednesday, traveling to UMES for a 3:00 p.m. matchup in Princess Anne, Md. The Buff & Blue will then host Rhode Island for a three-game series starting on Friday at Tucker Field.
