ARLINGTON, Va. – The George Washington baseball team concluded its 13-game homestand on Tuesday afternoon with an 8-6 loss to Georgetown. The Revolutionaries relinquished all eight Hoya runs in the sixth inning, unable to make a late-inning comeback to steal the win.
GW got the scoring started in the first inning when Steve DiTomaso blasted a two-run homer to left center field. The home run was DiTomaso's first of the season and came on the heels of a leadoff double from Sam Gates. A bullpen day for GW, Brandon Siegenthaler started on the mound for the Revolutionaries and pitched two solid innings before turning it over to the next arm. Siegenthaler got GW rolling by only allowing one base runner in the first two frames and tallying a strikeout. Shugy Klein pitched the third for GW, earning a 1-2-3 inning before Jarrett Korson blanked Georgetown in the fourth and fifth.
In the sixth, Georgetown erupted for eight total runs, getting five off Cade Davis, who was eventually charged with the loss, and three off Max Haug. The inning was punctuated by a grand slam from Michael Exe to push the Hoya lead to 8-2. GW wouldn't go away quietly, getting three runs back in the seventh courtesy of a home run from Charlie Rogan. The three-run blast was Rogan's first hit of the season and his first home run with the Buff & Blue.
After Georgetown's offensive explosion in the sixth, Tyler Blankenship took the mound and pitched the final 3.2 innings, allowing three hits and no earned runs. GW entered the bottom half of the ninth inning down 8-5 and looked to spark a rally with the first four batters reaching base successfully. Nick Mullen tallied an RBI in the frame, singling to left field to score Alexander Wright. With runners on the corners and no outs, GW was unable to plate any more runs. The game was ended when GW was picked off at first base, sealing the victory for the Hoyas.
GW's offense was led by Rogan who finished 2-for-4 with three RBI and a run scored. DiTomaso went 2-for-4 from the dish with two RBI and a run, while Mullen recorded one hit and one RBI. Wright went 1-for-3 from the plate and scored two runs, while reigning A-10 Co-Rookie of the Week Robbie Lavey recorded one hit in two at-bats.
GW hits the road this weekend for a three-game series with Presbyterian starting on Friday night. First pitch from Clinton, S.C., is set for 6:00 p.m.
