Baseball Secures Series-Opening Win at Presbyterian

CLINTON, S.C. – The George Washington baseball team secured a 6-3 series-opening win at Presbyterian on Friday night. The victory was highlighted by GW's pitching staff who only allowed two hits in the contest.
The Buff & Blue struck first in the game, plating a run in the opening inning off a wild pitch from the Blue Hose. Ellis Schwartz scored from third base on the play to give GW the quick 1-0 advantage. Presbyterian took its first lead of the game in the second inning, using one of its two hits on a two-run homer from Eli Lazio. The Blue Hose added on to the advantage in the fourth inning, dropping a sacrifice bunt down to score a run from third base. From that point on GW's defense would tighten up, not allowing a single hit past the fourth inning.
An inning later, GW's offense came alive, putting up five runs to take a commanding 6-3 lead. Schwartz delivered the first run in the frame for the Buff & Blue, singling to left field to score Sam Gates. Robbie Lavey, the reigning A-10 Co-Rookie of the Week, knotted the game at three when he reached first via an error by Presbyterian's third baseman. Scoring on the error was Schwartz, his second run of the game. GW took the lead one batter later when Tim Nicholson hit a sacrifice fly to right field, scoring Steve DiTomaso to put the Revolutionaries up for good. GW added two more insurance runs in the inning courtesy of a two-run double from Robby Wacker. Charlie Rogan and Lavey scored on the hit, bringing the score to its eventual final mark of 6-3.
After GW starter Michael Foltz exited the game at the end of the seventh inning, the Buff & Blue turned to its bullpen to close the game. Benny Wilson and Brandon Siegenthaler combined to keep Presbyterian off the scoreboard in the final two innings, registering three total strikeouts in the process. It total, GW's pitching staff struck out 10 batters, with Foltz recording seven of them, in the combined two-hit contest. Foltz picked up the win, moving him to 2-1 on the season, while Brandon Siegenthaler picked up his second save of the year.
At the plate, GW was led by McGwire Tuffy, who totaled three hits on the day. Schwartz finished 2-for-4 with two runs and an RBI, while Nicholson also went 2-for-4 from the dish with an RBI. Wacker recorded one hit and two RBI for GW, while Lavey scored a run and provided an RBI. Sam Gates also tallied a hit and a run for the Buff & Blue in the leadoff spot.
