ARLINGTON, Va. – The George Washington baseball team split its doubleheader with Canisius on Sunday, winning the first game 5-3, but falling in the nightcap, 4-2. The first game of the day was a makeup for yesterday's postponement due to inclement weather. Canisius picks up the series win after defeating the Revolutionaries 5-2 on Friday afternoon.
GAME ONE
After three scoreless innings to open the game, Canisius jumped out to a 1-0 lead, recording a run via a solo homer in the top of the fourth inning. GW immediately had an answer, getting a run of their own in the bottom half of the inning via an RBI groundout from Tim Nicholson. Jude Clough scored on the play, his fourth run of the season. Canisius recaptured the lead in the fifth off another solo home run and would add to its lead in the seventh off an RBI single.
Trailing 3-1 entering the eighth inning, GW's bats came alive, scoring four runs in the inning to take a 5-3 lead. Up to that point, GW had only scored three total runs in the previous 16 innings of play going back to Friday's game against the Golden Griffins. The inning was kickstarted by Ellis Schwartz who singled through the left side. Scoring on the played were Alexander Wright and Bryan Belo to tie the score at three. The Buff & Blue took its first lead of the day one batter later when Nick Mullen delivered an RBI double to left field to score Robbie Lavey. Sam Gates capped off the frame with an RBI single to right field, scoring Schwartz from second base.
GW would turn to Brandon Siegenthaler in the ninth inning and he wouldn't disappoint, tossing a 1-2-3 frame to close out the win. Siegenthaler picked up his first save of the season, while Max Haug earned his second win of the year on the mound. Graham Jeffries started on the mound for GW, tossing 4.1 innings and striking out five. He gave up two earned runs on four hits. Justin Guiliano earned the start for Canisius, throwing six innings and allowing one earned run. Ethan Hennessy was charged with the loss, his first of the season.
Leading GW on offense was Ellis Schwartz who went 1-for-2 with two RBI, a run scored and a walk. Sam Gates finished 2-for-5 with an RBI, while Tim Nicholson added an RBI as well. Bryan Belo recorded a 1-for-4 line with a run scored for GW.
GAME TWO
In a reversal of rolls, GW was the first to find the scoreboard in game two, tallying a run in the second inning off an RBI single from Belo. Scoring on the play was Steve DiTomaso. Both teams would remain scoreless until the fifth inning when Canisius evened the score at one off an RBI groundout. Like GW's offense has proven to do many times already this season, it had an answer for Canisius' first run of the game. In the bottom half of the fifth, Lavey stepped to the plate and ripped an RBI single into left field, scoring Mullen on the play to recapture a 2-1 lead.
In the sixth inning, Canisius recorded its third solo home run of the day, tying the game back up at two apiece. The score wouldn't remain tied for long as the Golden Griffins got another run off a sacrifice fly to take a 3-2 advantage later in the inning. Despite opportunities, GW wouldn't manage to score again for the rest of the contest. Canisius added an insurance run in the fifth courtesy of the teams fourth solo shot of the day, bringing the score to its eventual final mark of 4-2.
Teddy Brennan started on the mound for GW, throwing five total innings and striking out four. Brennan allowed two earned runs on six hits. Brayden Kurtz took the loss for the Revolutionaries, moving to 0-2 on the year, after throwing one inning and letting up an unearned run. Andrew Cutler tossed the remaining three innings of the contest, allowing four hits and one earned run while also striking out four batters. Feliz Morin earned the win for Canisius after throwing six innings and allowing two runs in the start. Tom Peltier recorded his first save with 0.2 innings pitched and one strikeout.
Steve DiTomaso and Nick Mullen led the GW offense with two hits and a run scored each, while Robie Lavey finished 2-for-4 with an RBI. Bryan Belo went 1-for-3 with an RBI, while Alexander Wright and Sam Gates each added one hit apiece.
The Revolutionaries return to action Tuesday to host DMV-foe Georgetown at Tucker Field. First pitch is slated for 2:30 p.m., with live coverage available on ESPN+.
