Foltz Shines, Ritchie Reaches Benchmark in Baseball’s 10-0 Win over UAlbany
3/1/2024 9:09:00 PM | Baseball
Ritchie, who's in his 12th season at the helm of the program, surpasses Tom Walter for most victories by a head coach in program history. Ritchie is one of just three coaches to accumulate 200 or more wins at GW and has led the program to four 30-win seasons. Ritchie is a GW Athletics Hall of Famer for his career as a player at GW and was also named the A-10 Coach of the Year in 2013.
Leading GW to the win was Foltz who picked up his first victory on the mound this season. Foltz tossed seven shutout innings, sitting down the first 12 batters he faced in the ballgame. Foltz only allowed three baserunners all game and recorded four strikeouts in the effort. Benny Wilson relieved Foltz in the eighth inning, pitching two more shutout frames to seal the victory for GW. Wilson struck out three of the 11 batters he faced, allowing four hits and walking one.
GW's offense made sure to back up the pitching staff, immediately applying some relief with a run in the first inning. GW tallied the score via an RBI single from Brett Young that scored Steve DiTomaso. GW's offense would remain dormant until the fourth when Robby Wacker would bring home Bryan Belo for the second run of the game. Wacker shot a double down the leftfield line, scoring Belo from second base.
In the sixth inning, GW erupted for four more runs, opening a 6-0 lead. The inning was highlighted by a sacrifice fly from Sam Gates that scored Ellis Schwartz, an RBI double from DiTomaso that brought home Nick Mullen and a two-RBI single from Jude Clough that scored both Robbie Lavey and DiTomaso. The GW Revs wouldn't stop there, putting up four more runs in the eighth to seal the win. Gates got the inning started with a towering two-run homer over the rightfield wall, while Alexander Wright recorded his first RBI of the season in a pinch-hit opportunity. McGwire Tuffy brought home GW's final run, singling to rightfield to score Wright.
DiTomaso finished with a 2-for-4 line with two runs scored and an RBI, while Clough went 2-for-5 with two RBI and a run. Gates finished 1-for-2 with three RBI and a run scored, while Wacker and Schwartz both notched two hits apiece.
The Revolutionaries continue their three-game weekend series with UAlbany tomorrow. First pitch is slated for 1:00 p.m., with live stats available on GWsports.com.
