Baseball Welcomes UAlbany for Weekend Series

WASHINGTON – Following a 12-inning walk-off winner on Tuesday, the George Washington baseball team returns to Tucker Field for a three-game series against UAlbany. The series opens on Friday at 2:30 p.m. and extends into Saturday (1:00 p.m.) and Sunday (12:00 p.m.). Friday's and Sunday's games will be streamed on ESPN+, with live stats available on GWsports.com for all three contests.
LAST TIME OUT
After scoring three runs in the bottom of the ninth to push the game to extra innings, the George Washington baseball team secured the 6-5 win via a walk-off RBI single from first-year Conlon Walker.
The Retrievers jumped on top early, tallying the game's first run in the top of the opening inning off an RBI double down the left field line. The game would remain at a 1-0 deficit until the fourth when the GW Revs knotted the score at one apiece off an RBI groundout from Jude Clough. The Buff & Blue grabbed its first lead of the game two innings later when Clough once again delivered, driving in his second run of the day off a double down the left field line.
UMBC would have an immediate answer, putting up four runs in the seventh inning to take a commanding 5-2 lead. Unable to muster any runs in the seventh or eighth, GW entered the ninth down three and looking for a way to extend the contest. After working the bases loaded, McGwire Tuffy was hit by a UMBC pitch to bring in GW's first run of the frame. Charlie Rogan proceeded to earn an RBI walk, followed by Alexander Wright scoring on a wild pitch to tie the game in the ninth inning.
After using seven pitchers through the game's first nine innings, GW turned to Max Haug in the 10th inning. Haug proceeded to toss 2.2 innings of hitless baseball to keep UMBC off the board through the remainder of the game. Haug struck out five of the 10 batters he faced, giving him seven on the season.
Entering the bottom of the 12th inning, Nick Mullen got GW's offense started with a single through the left side. Sam Gates then advanced Mullen to third on a double to right center, putting runners on second and third with only one out. After UMBC intentionally walked Steve DiTomaso to load the bases, Walker stepped to the plate and delivered GW the win, sending a single up the middle of the infield to score Mullen from third base. The walk-off is GW's first of the season and moves the team's winning streak to three games.
RITCHIE EQUALS THE MILESTONE
Tuesday's win over UMBC gave head coach Gregg Ritchie his 275th career with as GW's skipper. This puts him in a tie for the program record for most head coaching wins, tying him with Tom Walter who led the team from 1997-04. Ritchie will have three opportunities to secure the record this weekend and cement himself in GW history.
SCOUTING THE GREAT DANES
UAlbany arrives in the DMV with an 0-3 record after being swept by ninth-ranked Tennessee last weekend. In a tough road matchup to open the year, the Great Danes were outscored by a combined total of 41-11 and were shutout 12-0 in Sunday's series-finale. The Volunteers also poured on 21 runs in Saturday's contest, winning by a final score of 21-6.
The Great Danes were led by Ryan Ferremi who finished with five total hits in the opening series. Ferremi recorded one of the team's two home runs and also drove in three RBI. Jared Toby notched four hits for UAlbany with two of them being doubles, while Mike Prisco recorded the team's other home run and drove in three runs. Owen Birkman, Connor Eisenmann and Thomas Quinn each earned a start in the series. Birkman tossed five total innings and gave up two earned runs, while Eisenmann went 3.1 innings and allowed five earned runs. Quinn notched 2.2 innings pitched, allowing four earned runs on the day.
