Baseball Storms Back for Thrilling Extra Innings Win

The Retrievers jumped on top early, tallying the game's first run in the top of the opening inning off an RBI double down the left field line. The game would remain at a 1-0 deficit until the fourth when the GW Revs knotted the score at one apiece off an RBI groundout from Jude Clough. The Buff & Blue grabbed its first lead of the game two innings later when Clough once again delivered, driving in his second run of the day off a double down the left field line.
UMBC would have an immediate answer, putting up four runs in the seventh inning to take a commanding 5-2 lead. Unable to muster any runs in the seventh or eighth, GW entered the ninth down three and looking for a way to extend the contest. After working the bases loaded, McGwire Tuffy was hit by a UMBC pitch to bring in GW's first run of the frame. Charlie Rogan proceeded to earn an RBI walk, followed by a Alexander Wright scoring on a wild pitch to tie the game in the ninth inning.
After using seven pitchers through the game's first nine innings, GW turned to Max Haug in the 10th inning. Haug proceeded to toss 2.2 innings of hitless baseball to keep UMBC off the board through the remainder of the game. Haug struck out five of the 10 batters he faced, giving him seven on the season.
Entering the bottom of the 12th inning, Nick Mullen got GW's offense started with a single through the left side. Sam Gates then advanced Mullen to third on a double to right center, putting runners on second and third with only one out. After UMBC intentionally walked Steve DiTomaso to load the bases, Walker stepped to the plate and delivered GW the win, sending a single up the middle of the infield to score Mullen from third base. The walk-off is GW's first of the season and moves the team's winning streak to three games.
Michael Foltz started on the mound for GW, tossing the opening inning and allowing one run with two strikeouts. Brandon Siegenthaler was the first reliever out of the bullpen for the Buff & Blue, throwing four innings and striking out five batters. Andrew Cutler also had a lights out showing out of the bullpen, throwing 2.1 innings, and only allowing one hit. Cutler struck out a team-high six batters out of the nine he faced. Haug picked up the win, his second of the year, after locking down the UMBC offense in crunch time.
GW's offense was led by Mullen who finished 2-for-3 with a run scored, while Walker went 2-for-2 with an RBI and a run scored. Gates tallied a 2-for-5 line in GW's leadoff spot, while Clough notched two RBI for the Buff & Blue.
GW is back in action tomorrow at Coppin State for another mid-week nonconference matchup. First pitch is scheduled for 3:00 p.m., with live stats available on GWsports.com.
