WASHINGTON – Fresh off a series win over Bryant last weekend, the George Washington baseball team is set for two non-conference midweek contests. The Revolutionaries welcome UMBC for a 2:30 PM matchup on Tuesday, then travel to Coppin State on Wednesday at 3:00 PM. Neither game will be streamed, however, fans can follow live stats at GWsports.com.
LAST TIME OUT
After suffering a 13-10 loss in game one of the home-opening doubleheader, GW bounced back for two convincing wins to claim the team's first series win of the year. GW overcame a slow start on Saturday to earn a 12-4 victory on Saturday, then followed it up with a dominant 16-3 win on Sunday. Graham Jeffries picked up his first win in the Buff & Blue on Saturday, while Benny Wilson also recorded his first save of the 2024 season. Sunday was the Teddy Brennan show with the junior tossing seven innings and only allowing one earned run. Brennan tallied 10 strikeouts and en route to his first victory of the year.
Offensively, Sam Gates had a stellar weekend, finishing 8-for-15 from the plate across all three games including two home runs, three doubles and eight RBI. Steve DiTomaso went 6-for-16 on the weekend, recording four RBI and scoring five runs. Robby Wacker also had a solid showing, recording four RBI and three runs scored for the Buff & Blue.
RITCHIE INCHES CLOSER
With two wins over the weekend, head coach Gregg Ritchie needs just one more win to tie, and two more wins to become the program's all-time winningest head coach. Tom Walter, who served as GW's skipper from 1997-04, currently occupies the top spot with 275, while Ritchie sits just behind at 274. A win on Tuesday against UMBC would equal the program record, giving him an opportunity to claim the program record on Wednesday at Coppin State.
SCOUTING THE RETRIEVERS
UMBC enters the Tuesday matchup 0-3 after being swept by Santa Clara over the weekend. The Retrievers gave up at least 10 runs in each game, losing the weekend by a combined score of 34-14. Derek Paris leads the team in hitting through the first three games of the year, boasting a .375 batting average with three total hits and an RBI. Leewood Molessa is batting .364 with four hits and two RBI, while Anthony Swenda holds a .333 batting average with two RBI as well. UMBC is led by head coach Liam Bowen who's in his fifth season at the helm of the program. Bowen holds a career mark of 73-98 and achieved his first winning season in 2023 after leading the program to a 30-27 record.
SCOUTING THE EAGLES
Coppin State heads into the weekday matchup with GDUB riding high after picking up the team's first win over the season over Saint Peter's last Sunday. The Eagles opened the season 0-5, but got on the right track with a 13-12 walk-off win over the Peacocks. Damon Gaither tallied the walk-off hit, a single to deep centerfield to drive home the winning run. Previously this season, Coppin State traveled to fellow A-10 school George Mason and lost 21-2. The Eagles were also defeated by double digits in their season-opener, losing 24-0 to Creighton. Bryce Thompson leads the team in batting averages, holding a line of .389 with seven hits and three RBI. Kai Holm is currently hitting .318 with seven hits and five RBI, while Gaither sits at .292 with four RBI.
