Olean, N.Y. -- GW knew the task at hand this weekend at St. Bonaventure and showed Friday that it understood the assignment, drubbing the Bonnies 14-1 on the road. Behind eight sterling innings from Logan Koester, and 17 hits from the Buff and Blue bats, George Washington cruised to the blowout win. However, by virtue of Rhode Island's win against VCU that pulled the two Rams into a seventh-place tie in the conference at 11-11, GW was eliminated from postseason contention, sitting at 9-12 with two games to play.
The season concludes tomorrow doubleheader-style, as inclement weather forecasted for Western New York on Saturday necessitated the change to play two Friday. The first game starts at noon, with 45 minutes between the contests.
Koester was the star Thursday, taking a shutout into the eighth inning. He struck out nine and walked just one, scattering seven hits over his eight innings on the mound. The righty earned his team-leading sixth win of the year, currently good for second in the conference, and will conclude his season as GW's wins leader, while ranking 10th in the A-10 in ERA (4.62). His 89.2 innings pitched this season top the A-10, with only teammate Chris Kahler having a chance to catch him for the most innings pitched in the conference in 2023.
At the plate GW knocked out four extra base hits, doubles from Steve DiTomaso and Anthony Frechette, with a Bryan Belo triple mixed in, and team-leading 11th home run of the season from Michael Kohn in the eighth, that piled on his club's 13-run total at the time.
In all, eight on the visitors side recorded a hit, with Alexander Wright (3), DiTomaso (2), Kohn (2), Frechette (2), Belo (2) and Ty Acker (3) all enjoying multiple-hit days. Wright and Kohn also both touched home three times, leading the charge of eight who scored Thursday.
Also in the contest, Eddie Micheletti rapped his conference-leading 82nd hit of the year.
