OLEAN, N.Y. - GW baseball put a bow on the 2023 season on Friday, completing its sweep over St. Bonaventure with victories in both games of Friday's doubleheader. The Buff and Blue won Game One, 8-2, before turning down the Bonnies, 7-1, in the finale. GW finished the season with a 21-34 record, including an 11-12 mark in A-10 play.
GW 8, St. Bonaventure 2
GW locked down Game One of the twinbill behind a quality start from Teddy Brennan and a 5-for-5 outing from Steve DiTomaso.
Brennan picked up his third win of the season in the start and allowed just one earned run on eight hits while punching out four. Austin Odell relieved Brennan in the eighth and brought GW to the finish line, allowing one run on three hits with three punchouts.
The middle of the order was the catalyst offensively for the Buff and Blue. Ditomaso, Eddie Micheletti and Robby Wacker combined for 10 of GW's 14 hits and scored three of GWs eight runs.
Ditomaso led the way with an impressive 5-for-5 outing, scoring twice and adding two steals. Micheletti and Wacker rounded out GWs four total stolen bases with one bag swiped apiece.
GW took the lead in the third inning and led the rest of the way. Bryan Belo hit the lone longball of the contest, a two-run shot in the fourth inning. It was Belo's fourth home run of the season as he collected RBI No. 32 and 33 - the third most on GW.
Tim Nicholson was also responsible for two RBI, coming on a ground-rule double in the sixth inning.
GW 7, St. Bonaventure 1
The Buff and Blue left nothing up to doubt in the season finale as they handled St. Bonaventure, 7-1, to complete the sweep of the Bonnies. GW allowed just one run behind solid pitching from starter Chris Kahler, an admirable extended relief effort from Chris Knight, and one inning from Anthony Germinerio.
Kahler went four complete innings and allowed just one run on five hits and punched out three. Kahler was relieved by Knight in the fifth inning, who allowed no runs on just one hit over four innings of relief.
The Buff and Blue wasted no time taking the lead in the finale. Wacker drove in GW's first run on an RBI double in the first inning, and a pair of bases-loaded walks, along with a sac fly from Micheletti, pushed the lead out to four after two innings.
The Bonnies got a run back in the fourth inning on an RBI double, but the GW outpour wasn't finished. The Buff and Blue loaded the bases again in the seventh inning and converted twice, first on an Anthony Frechette walk, then on a sac fly from Noah Levin.
GW capped its seven-run performance in the ninth inning with an Alexander Wright RBI single with the bases loaded that drove in one. All nine GW starters reached base in the finale - Michael Kohn being the only without a hit - but he reached safely in the ninth inning via the walk.
GW was dominant in the final series of the season, outscoring St. Bonaventure 29-4.
