ARLINGTON, Va. -- Through seven innings of baseball on Friday afternoon at Tucker Field, things shaped up well for the Buff and Blue of GW in the opener of a three-game series against George Mason. The bats staked starter Logan Koester to a 7-3 lead, with Michael Kohn going yard for his team-leading 10th home run of the season in the fifth, and Koester authoring a quality start to the tune of just three earned runs allowed on five hits and two free passes. If only it ended there.
Mason didn't relent and rallied for five runs in the last two innings, with three in the eighth and two in the ninth, the big blow coming off the bat of Connor Dykstra, who launched a two-run shot over the left-center scoreboard to jumpstart the rally. Entering the ninth, George Washington clung to a 7-6 lead, but Mason effectively played small ball with the go-ahead run scoring on a safety squeeze bunt.
When GW couldn't rally back in the ninth, the home-standing club fell to 8-10 in conference play this season while the Patriots improved to 10-8.
Robby Wacker, Sam Gates and Bryan Belo all had multiple RBIs for GW, hitting out of the sixth, eighth and ninth spots in the batting order. Wacker and Belo both registered a pair of hits, as did Kohn in the five-hole. Kohn also scored three times.
George Washington will employ a short memory when it takes on Mason again on Saturday. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m. but with inclement weather in the forecast, GWsports.com and @GWBaseball1 will have the latest updates.
