The game was knotted at 4-4 through three innings, with backstop Anthony Frechette doing the damage for George Washington. The grad student got his team on the board with a home run to left in the second, and plated two more in the third with a double.
From there the forecast turned and the Buff and Blue were unable to weather the storm. George Mason scored nine times in the final six innings, with crooked numbers posted a four-run fourth to push out to a big lead, and three-run ninth to put the game out of reach. GW outhit the Patriots 15-13, but an effective small ball attack with a seemingly endless supply of sac bunts, sac flies and hit by pitches, combined with seven walks drawn had Mason playing station-to-station baseball all afternoon as only two of the visitor's 13 hits were of the extra-base variety.
In the home dugout, George Washington had trouble bringing baserunners home as not only did the team pound out 15 hits, but also drew four walks and had a hit by pitch, threatening to break through with big innings early and often. Eddie Michelleti Jr. extended his A-10 leading hit-total to 81 in his four-hit afternoon, drawing closer to a batting title too with his average now at .391, just .004 behind the league-leader.
Steve DiTomaso (2-for-6), Michael Kohn (3-for-4), Frechette (3-for-5) and Bryan Belo (2-for-5) also had multiple hits, while Kohn joined Frechette with a multiple RBI day. Kohn's torrid season at the dish now has him ranked first on the team with 44 runs, third with 62 hits, second with 17 doubles, and first with 10 home runs and 44 RBIs (tied with Michelleti).
Chris Kahler will take the mound Sunday for Senior Day at The Tuck, looking to salvage the series with a win in the finale. Prior to the game at 11:15 a.m., GW will honor Ditomaso, Connor Harris, Logan Koester, Kohn, Logan Leax and Austin Odell, plus grad students Frechette, Chris Knight and Noah Levin in Senior Day ceremonies. The club will also identify the 2023 Team MVP.
